The Failsafe Support Officer is a varied, multitask role which involves the implementation of a robust failsafe system to ensure all people with diabetes from the age of 12 years receive screening to prevent sight threatening diabetic retinopathy.

This post holder will be responsible for supporting the Failsafe Officer to manage the failsafe aspect of the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme including the implementation and monitoring of all failsafe administration procedures which close the loop from GP referral, call and recall, exclusions and referral to Ophthalmology.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient day to day running of the central administration function of the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme working closely with the Failsafe Officer and Programme Manager.

The Wirral Diabetic Eye Screening Programme is delivered in line with the National Quality Assurance Standards and local policies and procedures. This requires excellent communication with patients and colleagues within the Trust and in Primary and Secondary Care.

  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date register of patients with diabetes requiring retinal screening, based on referrals from GP’s along with information obtained from the ‘General Practice to Diabetic Retinopathy Screening System’ (GP2DRS) to prevent any diabetic patients not being referred to the service.
  • Understand the purpose of diabetic eye screening and what happens at an appointment to be able to act as first point of contact for the programme dealing with enquiries in a helpful manner.
  • Communicating relevant information to stakeholders or referring to other members of the team as appropriate.
  • Understand NHS England service objectives / quality standards which must be adhered to within the programme.
  • Work using a number of different software packages including NEC Optomize, Cerner Millenium PAS and Microsoft Office (specifically Excel) ensuring all systems are used with confidentiality, sensitivity and precision.
  • Be able to understand diabetic eye screening results which are deemed as referable/not referable to the Hospital Eye Service (HES), identifying any concerns to the Programme Manager / Clinical Lead.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient day to day running of the central administration function of the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme working closely with the Failsafe Officer and Programme Manager.
  • Support the clinical pathway between the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme and Ophthalmology ensuring patients are not lost to follow up.
