Hours: Full time, 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Contract: Temporary – Duration: 3 months – Pay: £16.65 per hour

The role is to lead the launch and day‑to‑day operation of a brand‑new hospital retail catering unit, due to open within the next four weeks. You will be instrumental in overseeing the opening, supporting final preparations, recruiting and developing the team, implementing operational procedures and ensuring a successful launch. Following the opening, you will manage the busy catering outlet, providing food and beverages to staff, patients and visitors while maintaining the highest standards of food safety, customer service and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee the successful opening of the new retail catering unit, ensuring the service is fully operational and ready for launch.
  • Oversee day‑to‑day operations, ensuring a high‑quality, efficient service for staff, patients and visitors.
  • Manage, support and develop supervisory and frontline staff, creating a positive, high‑performing team.
  • Plan and coordinate service delivery, including menus, product offerings and dietary requirements in line with healthcare standards.
  • Monitor service performance, analyse operational data and produce KPI reports.
  • Ensure full compliance with food safety, health and safety, infection prevention and all relevant legislation.
  • Manage budgets, control costs and support income generation while maintaining excellent value and service standards.
  • Handle customer feedback, service issues and complaints in a professional and timely manner.
  • Promote healthier eating initiatives and support public health objectives through the retail catering offer.
  • Support recruitment, induction, training and performance management processes, particularly during mobilisation and opening.
  • Maintain accurate workforce records, including rotas, absence management and payroll information.
  • Contribute to continuous service improvement, audits and quality initiatives to enhance customer experience and operational performance.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, customers and suppliers to ensure smooth and effective delivery of the catering service.
  • Provide operational cover and management support across wider catering and commercial services when required.
About You
  • Previous experience managing a busy retail catering, café, canteen or hospitality operation.
  • Experience opening, mobilising or launching a new catering operation is highly advantageous.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a diverse team.
  • Experience working within high‑volume food service environments.
  • A valid Food Safety Level 3 Certificate is essential.
  • Good understanding of food hygiene, health and safety and infection prevention procedures.
  • Experience managing budgets, stock control and financial performance.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Able to work under pressure and make effective decisions in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Confident using IT systems for reporting, rotas and operational administration.
