- Minimum age 18 years old at commencement of employment
- Meet Civil Service nationality requirements
- Pass a medical and fitness assessment
- Meet required eyesight standard in both eyes
- Have suitable hearing standard for safety reasons (without hearing aids)
- Allowed tattoos that are not offensive, discriminatory, violent, or intimidating; facial tattoos generally not acceptable unless for cultural, religious, or medical reasons
- For category A high‑security prison: have lived in the UK for the last 3 years
Pay & Working Hours
- Training: 37 hours a week, then 37, 39 or 41 hours a week
- 37 hrs / week – £33,746 a year
- 39 hrs / week – £35,875 a year (includes 20 % unsocial pay)
- 41 hrs / week – £38,003 a year

- 25 days’ annual holiday (rising to 30 days after 10 years’ service)

Employment Status
Pass vacancy – successful candidates will be offered a job immediately if a position is available; otherwise they will be placed on a reserve list. A successful pass from the assessment centre is valid for 12 months if you wish to apply for vacancies at other prisons.
