We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a permanent General Building Engineer to join our Ministry of Justice (MoJ) account in HMP Cardiff, Knox Rd, Cardiff CF24 0UG. This role is based on-site. The standard hours of work are 39 hours.
At Amey, we’re supporting our justice client, His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) by providing them with safe, clean and efficient prisons. By using our facilities management expertise, we help keep 60 secure premises across England and Wales running smoothly. The General Building Engineer plays an important part in ensuring the planned and reactive maintenance work within the prisons is carried out in a safe, compliant and timely manner.
What you will do:
- Ensure availability of critical parts for statutory tasks and manage remedial tasks in the CAFM system.
- Perform general and semi‑skilled maintenance activities, including security systems like CCTV and alarms.
- Conduct monthly checks and tests of fire extinguisher equipment, fire hydrants and hoses.
- Complete quarterly RCD testing and inspect misting units.
- Maintain fire doors and perform flushing and tap‑temperature tests as per water risk assessments.
- Undertake monthly and annual emergency lighting checks.
- Check and test smoke vents as required.
- Carry out any other duties as required.

Preferred qualifications:
Ideally you will be qualified in multiple areas of maintenance as outlined above with experience in general building maintenance. Experience working within a custodial environment, basic Health and Safety knowledge, and exposure to building and system compliance would also be desirable, although not essential.
