We are looking for a qualified, experienced and knowledgeable individual to become our Gas Technical Officer. You will be our “go to person” for all Gas Safety and Technical related works and matters across our internal office buildings as well as sites and client properties. Therefore, you will need to have a strong technical knowledge of all things Gas Safety. A strong focus on customer service and problem-solving is essential.
Working closely with our existing operational teams, you will work across all of our geographical areas in Scotland. We operate from Edinburgh, across to Glasgow, up to Inverness and Elgin and all areas in-between.
This role is critical to our operational performance, to ensure compliance. You will need to provide independent, evidence-based quality control and technical assurance of gas work being delivered by CARDO Scotland’s directly employed engineers and approved subcontractors. The postholder will inspect work in progress (WIP) and completed work, identify unsafe conditions and workmanship defects, verify that applicable gas safety requirements and CARDO procedures are followed, and ensure findings are recorded, escalated and effectively closed out.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Undertake planned, unannounced and risk-based WIP and post-work inspections across servicing, repairs, installations, boiler replacements and other authorised gas activities.
- Inspect direct labour and subcontractor work, including higher-risk work and follow-up checks after defects or incidents.
- Check work against applicable gas safety legislation, current Gas Safe Register requirements, relevant standards, manufacturer instructions, approved specifications and CARDO procedures.
- Verify relevant test, commissioning, flue, combustion, ventilation and certification evidence within the engineer’s authorised scope.
- Identify and immediately escalate unsafe situations, suspected gas escapes, dangerous gas fittings, unauthorised activity and critical non-conformities.
- Require affected work to stop or be made safe in accordance with CARDO authority and emergency procedures
- involve the competent technical lead and emergency services/network operator where appropriate.
- Record clear, factual findings with risk rating, photographs, job reference, responsible owner and deadline.
- Raise and track corrective actions, re-inspect where required and verify effective close-out before closure.
- Support formal incident investigations and root-cause analysis without prejudging individual responsibility.
- Confirm that operatives and subcontractors undertaking inspected work are appropriately authorised for their activity
- Flag gaps in Gas Safe categories, competence, induction or supervision. Escalate any indication of unauthorised sub-subcontracting
- Maintain accurate inspection records and contribute to weekly/monthly QC dashboards, coverage rates, defect trends, repeat failures, branch/contract comparisons and risk-based sampling plans.
- Support reporting on the Group minimum 10% QC requirement, including clear denominators and separate WIP/post-work activity.
- Provide constructive technical feedback to engineers, subcontractors and supervisors; recommend toolbox talks, refresher training, supervision or competence reassessment.
- Share lessons learned and recurring themes with operational managers and Group Compliance.
- Conduct annual skills assessments on all directly employed engineers and subcontractors, making clear recommendations of any identified gaps, skill shortage and seeing these through until completion.
- Work with Gas Compliance, regional management, supervisors, SHEQ, customer teams and subcontractor managers.
- Attend technical reviews, support internal/external audits and ensure inspection records are retained in approved CARDO systems.
KEY SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Extensive working knowledge of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.
- Working knowledge relating to managing the delivery of gas safety compliance or the built environment.
- A thorough working knowledge of understanding and interpreting manufacturer data and approving the most appropriate systems/solutions.
- Having the experience and confidence to challenge something that isn’t right and proving this factual evidence.
- Be confident to provide clear and concise gas safety advice and guidance to clients, colleagues, consultants and contractors.
- Conduct and arrange gas safety training sessions to staff and clients
- Keep up to date with changes in gas safety legislation and industry best practice
- Attend client meetings as required
- Produce clear and concise gas safety reports.
- Substantial recent experience of domestic and commercial gas servicing, installation, repair, testing and commissioning
- Proven ability to identify unsafe work and evaluate technical evidence.
- Qualified and excellent working knowledge of both domestic and commercial gas heating installations and appliances across a variety of differing boiler manufacturer types.
- Experience of technical QC, auditing, supervision or structured inspections
- Confident producing clear defect reports, photographic records and follow-up actions.
Please note all our roles are subject to Background, Identity & Security checks before commencement of employment.
