This is an exciting opportunity to take on a partnership role funded jointly between the Wales Centre for Primary and Emergency Care Research (PRIME Centre Wales) and the Wales Cancer Research Centre (WCRC), funded by Health and Care Research Wales and hosted by the Division of Population Medicine, Cardiff University. PRIME Centre Wales aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people in Wales and internationally, through high quality research on topics of national policy priority which contributes to the evidence base in primary and emergency care. PRIME is led by Professor Andrew Carson‑Stevens, Professor of Patient Safety, at Cardiff University. The Wales Cancer Research Centre aims to revitalise cancer research in Wales, and provides strategic oversight and coordination, directly funds promising researchers, and promotes cooperation between cancer researchers, institutions and stakeholders across Wales. WCRC is led by Professor Mererid Evans, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Velindre Cancer Centre. The successful candidate will work closely with Professor Kate Brain (Director, Division of Population Medicine; PRIME Lead for Screening, Prevention and Early Diagnosis; and WCRC/CReSt lead for Cancer Prevention, Early Detection, Screening and Health Services Research) and colleagues in the PRIME/WCRC Centres to build research capacity in cancer screening, prevention and early diagnosis.

Responsibilities

  • To develop and deliver independent and original clinical research that aligns with the aims of PRIME Centre Wales and Wales Cancer Research Centre (WCRC) work packages on cancer screening, prevention and early diagnosis outcomes in and beyond Wales, with a particular focus on addressing inequalities; and to support the development of new lines of research in related areas.
  • To bring your clinical expertise to inform and develop research networks and collaborations through regular national/international conference/seminar presentations.
  • To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective national and international publications, research seminars, meetings and conferences.
  • To develop and maintain clinical and academic networks internally and externally, using frontline GP expertise to identify emerging research needs and shape research ideas that reflect real‑world primary care practice, ensuring research ideas are relevant to the aims of PRIME Centre Wales and WCRC.
  • To participate in additional School research activities as required.
  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise the profile of PRIME, WCRC and the School of Medicine, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world.
  • Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.

Qualifications and Education

  • MRCGP.
  • On GP Register and currently re‑validated as a GP, and full General Medical Council (GMC) registration required.
  • Established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within the field of cancer early detection/diagnosis and health inequalities.
  • Growing national reputation within this academic field.
  • Proven substantial record of publications in national journals and/or other research outputs.
  • Proven ability to secure external research funding as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co‑Investigator (Co‑I), with a strong and sustained portfolio of successful research grants.
  • Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop a research team.
  • Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and team‑working within work.
  • IT literacy and ability to use software such as Excel.

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of collaborations with industry.
  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance research activities of the School.

Employment Details

This position is part‑time (15 hours per week) and fixed term for a period of 12 months. Salary: £109,061 per annum, pro rata (Point GP00 on the GP Educator Pay Scale). The role is eligible to be offered on a blended working basis, meaning that as well as spending time working on campus you can also choose to spend some time working from another location, e.g. your home. The University is committed to offering this flexibility, wherever the role and business need allows, supporting work‑life balance.
