Translator
We are looking to strengthen our Welsh translation services to enable the University to promote the Welsh language across all Schools and Departments and fulfil its duties in accordance with its Welsh Language Strategy, Yr Alwad / Embrace it and its Welsh Language Standards.
In this role, you’ll be part of a high-energy and customer focused translation team working across the institution. You will undertake duties related to providing a high-quality translation service (English>Welsh and Welsh>English) by utilizing your skills and experience of the Welsh language. You will also resolve issues independently and use judgement and creativity to suggest the optimum resolution to issues as they occur.
The team supports the University’s core activities by providing a high quality and effective translation Service, which covers translation of published text (online and print) and simultaneous translation. As expert advisors, the team continues to be critical to the University becoming a bilingual University, which complies with the Welsh Language Standards.
Members of the team will be trusted colleagues, building effective working relationships with colleagues in the department, in Professional Services and in Academic Departments.
While undertaking your role, you will be an agent for change, reviewing your own performance and progress, looking for opportunities to learn. You will review the effectiveness in respect of our service delivery and suggest improvements in our processes and systems.
You will be a highly motivated team-player, capable of working under pressure in a professional environment to undertake translations on time and to a high standard. As well as excellent translation skills, you should also have relevant experience of dealing with translation requests and managing your workload effectively in accordance with various demands and deadlines.
This post is full-time and open-ended.
Salary: £27,644 – £30,805 per annum (Grade 4)

Duties and Responsibilities
Translation Service Development Duties
- Collaborate on the development of a university-wide Welsh translation service with the Welsh Translation Service Manager and colleagues within Professional Services and Academic Schools.
- Assisting the Welsh Translation Service Manager to resolve issues independently and use judgement and creativity to suggest the optimum resolution to issues as they occur.
Operational Duties
Provide a professional WelshEnglish translation service to the University, interpreting the requirements of the customer and the subject of the communication to provide contextually appropriate translations, adhering to the compliance requirements of the University and ensuring the University’s Welsh language is presented to a high and consistent standard
General Duties
- To undertake familiarisation with the University, its structures, aims and objectives, compliance requirements.
- To be cognisant of confidentiality and issues around personal and sensitive data in all areas of activity.
- Abide by all relevant University policies.
- Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Proven ability to communicate effectively and accurately in both Welsh and English, orally and in writing, to a wide range of audiences, and at all levels.
- Experience of undertaking translation work.
- Demonstrable cultural awareness in relation to Wales, and the Welsh language.
- Proven ability to manage and prioritise own workload and to meet tight deadlines e.g. press and web releases.
Qualifications And Education
- Educated to a degree level or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills And Experience
Able to demonstrate expert professional knowledge within Welsh English Translation.
Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
- Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered.
Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving
- Evidence of ability to research and solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solution.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience of providing interpreting services or willingness to access appropriate training.
- A relevant professional qualification.
- Experience of undertaking translation work preferably within, or for, the Higher Education Sector.
- Experience of working in a Higher Education environment.
- Membership of a recognised Translation Association
- Experience of using translation memory software
