Lecturer – Teaching and Scholarship
The School of Physics & Astronomy, Cardiff University.
The School seeks a talented and highly motivated academic to support the planning and delivery of the School’s postgraduate taught (MSc) provision. The School offers six internationally recognised postgraduate taught programmes in physics and astrophysics, including MSc Physics, MSc Astrophysics, MSc Data-Intensive Physics, MSc Data-Intensive Astrophysics (part-hosted by the School of Computer Science), MSc Gravitational Wave Physics, and MSc Compound Semiconductor Physics. The successful candidate will help build and adapt our postgraduate teaching provision while ensuring an excellent educational experience for students.
You will have a PhD in Physics, Astrophysics, Engineering or a closely related subject from a leading university, or equivalent industrial or pedagogical experience. You will be an excellent communicator and teacher and have demonstrated the ability to effectively plan and teach at university level.

Job Description
Main function
Undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of modules/programmes within the undergraduate and postgraduate taught (MSc) provision within the School. Supervise students and undertake appropriate administrative duties. Pursue excellence in teaching and inspire others to do the same.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching
- Design and deliver teaching programmes for courses and contribute to module development as part of a module team
- Inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor/module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and providing constructive feedback
- Supervise the work of students including Undergraduate and Master’s students and the co-supervision of PGRs
- Provide pastoral care as a Personal Tutor and offer support and guidance to students, building trust
Scholarship
- Contribute to scholarship through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic/professional fora and disseminate results
- Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and other outputs that advance knowledge
- Collaborate interdisciplinarily within and beyond the university community
- Carry out other forms of scholarship including work with examinations (setting and marking papers), administration and committee participation
Other
- Engage with industrial, commercial, and public sector organisations to raise the School’s profile and pursue collaborations
- Undertake personal and professional development to enhance performance
- Mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on development
- Participate in School administration and promote the School externally
- Any other duties consistent with the role
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Qualifications and Education
- Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject or relevant industrial experience
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level, specifically related to MSc Astrophysics modules
- Demonstrated specialist knowledge in astrophysics (formation/evolution of stars, interstellar medium, galaxies, cosmology and/or exoplanets) and/or gravitational wave physics (general relativity and/or observational aspects)
- Ability to design, deliver and develop modules across teaching programmes
Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
- Excellent communication skills to present complex ideas clearly
- Ability to provide pastoral support and act as a personal tutor
Other
- Proven creativity, innovation and teamwork
Desirable Criteria
- Relevant professional qualification(s) such as AdvanceHE Associate Fellowship or Fellowship, or a postgraduate teaching qualification
- Evidence of collaborations with industry
- Ability to work without close supervision
- Ability to adapt to changing HE requirements
- Ability to participate in internal/external networks to enhance teaching and research
- Willingness to take responsibility for academically-related administration
- Ability to speak Welsh is an advantage
