Overview

Cardiff University, School of Optometry and Vision Sciences is seeking motivated and forward‑thinking optometrists to provide high‑quality clinical practice and teaching in the teach‑and‑treat glaucoma clinic.

We’d like to hear from you if you are an optometrist who is GOC registered with a Higher Certificate or Diploma in Glaucoma, as well as a passion for education with an ability to develop, deliver and evaluate a range of undergraduate and postgraduate taught modules and programmes.

Career Information

Part‑time post (4.5 hours per week) at Grade 7 Lecturer or Grade 8 Senior Lecturer with the primary aim of allowing the appointee to continue clinical practice outside the University.

Role in Teaching and Scholarship, fixed term until 1 October 2026. Specify the grade you are applying for when applying.

Salary

  • ÂŁ51,753 – ÂŁ56,535 per annum, pro‑rata, for Grade 7.
  • ÂŁ61,759 – ÂŁ67,468 per annum, pro‑rata, for Grade 8.

Job Description

Main Function

To deliver high‑quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise students, carry out administrative duties, pursue excellence in clinical practice, teaching and pedagogy, and inspire others to do the same.

Senior Lecturer (Grade 8 only)

To lead on and develop the clinical teaching and clinical provision for glaucoma within the School.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching (Grade 7 & 8)

  • Contribute to the design and delivery of teaching programmes/courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to module development as part of a module team.
  • Independently contribute to module and course development and lead modules.
  • Contribute to programme evaluation and research to assess the quality and impact of teaching and learning, with priority on delivering, through the student voice, an excellent student experience.
  • Carry out scholarship including work associated with examinations, setting and marking assessments, and providing constructive feedback to students in a timely manner; administer and participate in committee work.
  • Inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students in their learning experience and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of undergraduate and postgraduate students, including supervision of WGOS4 glaucoma clinics and placements.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of undergraduate and postgraduate students, including supervision of clinics, student projects, placements and Learning in Practice.

Senior Lecturer (Grade 8 only) – Additional Responsibilities

  • Supervise optometrists on placements for Higher Certificates in Glaucoma in the glaucoma clinics.
  • Co‑ordinate a programme of evaluation and research to assess the quality and impact of teaching and learning, and to make a significant contribution to the international development of such teaching.

Scholarship (Grade 7 & 8)

  • Contribute to scholarship through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums and disseminate the results of individual scholarship.
  • Supply pastoral care through both acting as a personal tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust.
  • Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work; collaborate interdisciplinary teams within and externally to the wider university community.

Senior Lecturer (Grade 8 only) – Scholarship

  • Undertake and lead educational research, pedagogical evaluation and scholarly activity, leading to publications in high‑quality professional and scholarly journals.
  • Participate in national and international conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of one’s own scholarship.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • GOC registration, and relevant experience in optometric practice. Maintain GOC registration and register with a relevant NHS Health Board to practice as an optometrist in patient‑facing clinics at Cardiff University with NHS patients.
  • PhD/DPhil in a Vision Science subject area or relevant clinical experience.
  • Higher Certificate in Glaucoma or a Diploma in Glaucoma or a comparable qualification.
  • Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning and/or equivalent qualification or willingness to work towards one.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Significant experience of advanced practice in Glaucoma.
  • Grade 8: Substantial experience at advanced practice in glaucoma with national leadership in glaucoma clinical practice.
  • Significant clinical supervision or teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
  • Grade 8: Substantial experience teaching at advanced clinical practice.
  • Significant experience and an emerging national reputation within an academic/clinical field.
  • Grade 8: Established national and growing international reputation.
  • The ability to contribute to the delivery and continued development of modules across the School’s teaching programmes. Experience of delivering and developing high‑quality advanced glaucoma care.
  • Grade 8: Substantial experience of delivering and developing high‑quality advanced glaucoma care.

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media.
  • Grade 8: Proven record of academic leadership.
  • Ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances, act as a personal tutor, and coordinate with others to ensure that programme quality and student needs and expectations are met.

Desirable Criteria

  • Diploma in Therapeutic Prescribing (Independent Prescribing).
  • Evidence of collaborations with the optometry sector.
  • Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of clinical practice and/or the higher education community.
  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the School.
  • Welsh language skills.

Additional Information

  • Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world, as required by the Head of School or nominee.
  • Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities.
  • Undergo personal and professional development appropriate to, and which will enhance performance in, the role of Lecturer.

Leadership – Senior Lecturer (Grade 8 only)

  • Provide academic and clinical leadership effectively and efficiently by managing, leading and motivating staff to deliver high‑quality clinical practice and teaching, in a culture of continuous improvement and collaborative working.
  • Be involved in School‑level strategic planning of teaching and clinics and contribute to wider strategic planning processes of the School and the University.
  • Undertake and lead operational administrative responsibilities, as required by Head of School or nominee, associated with the school’s education provision.
  • Engage effectively with industrial, commercial, and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the school’s profile, cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities.
  • Provide opportunities for staff development aimed at improving skills and knowledge in learning and teaching pedagogy, assessment, and feedback.
  • On behalf of the School, manage projects including the organisation of external activities.
