As part of our continued development, Cardiff University School of Psychology has an open-ended lecturer vacancy. We are a large, diverse and internationally leading School with highly rated teaching and research.

The post is available full-time. We are particularly looking for individuals with expertise or interest in the following areas: women’s health psychology, health or applied psychology.

For the T&R pathway, we aim to complement and extend our research and impact strengths in directions aligned to national and international challenges (as identified by research funders, such as NIHR), enabling successful candidates to build, lead and sustain research groups and new collaborations, as well as providing engaging teaching and academic leadership. For example, candidates can consider how they might align with and link between our research centres or other areas of strength (see http://psych.cf.ac.uk/ ). All lecturers also provide or support some teaching beyond their specialisms, for example in research methods or supporting tutorials or research supervision to existing applied psychological programmes.

This post is associated with the Women’s Health Research Wales Centre (https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/research/explore/research-units/womens-health-research-wales). As such, the post is open to candidates with strong motivation to enhance impactful research, innovation, co-production and teaching in women’s health, health and applied psychology. This is a full-time, open-ended position.

Salary: £51,039 – £55,755 per annum (Grade 7). Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.

Job Description

Main Function of Post

To pursue excellence in research, teaching and enterprise, and to inspire others to do the same. To deliver high-quality research-led teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and contribute to the research record of the School through commitment to carrying out research leading to publishing of high-quality research.

Research

  • To conduct research within the areas of women’s health psychology, health and applied psychology, and contribute to the overall internationally recognised research performance of the School and University, by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in peer-reviewed academic journals, international conferences and/or other research outputs, and the recruitment and supervision of research staff and postgraduate/MSc research students.
  • To independently develop and co-produce with stakeholders research objectives, projects or proposals for own or joint research including research funding, acting as a PI as required. To develop research networks through regular national/international conference/seminar presentations and stakeholder and community engagement.
  • To participate in School research activities.

Teaching

  • To independently contribute to module and curriculum development and lead modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, inspiring students
  • To design and deliver high-quality research-led teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • To carry out other forms of scholarship associated with teaching duties (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work, and the pastoral care of students of Cardiff University, as applies to the post.
  • To supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students, the supervision of PGR’s and acting as a PGR progress review panel member as required.
  • To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students.

Other

  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally, to raise awareness of the School and Women’s Health Research Wales Centre profiles, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile and translate research outcomes into impact beyond the academic sphere
  • To contribute to leadership, strategic development and improvements to the School, as appropriate for level of appointment.
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience.
  • Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning, or equivalent qualification or experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • An established expertise and proven portfolio of co-produced research experience in Women\’s health psychology, health, or applied psychology.
  • Significant teaching experience at a high level of quality at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
  • Growing national reputation within academic field
  • Proven substantial record of publications in national journals and/or other research outputs.
  • A clear strategic vision for future development, accompanied by proven ability to attain competitive research funding
  • Ability to contribute to the delivery and continued development of modules across the School teaching programmes

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working

  • Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication
  • The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of collaborations with industry, healthcare providers and practitioners, policymakers, or third sector including patient representatives
  • Evidence of expertise in analysis of routinely collected data, intersectional methodological approaches (quantitative, qualitative) or digital intervention
  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the School

Our Research

Our internationally leading research delivers advances in knowledge and improvements in quality of life through shaping public policy and improving health outcomes. Researchers in the School work across the breath of psychology and tackle major challenges facing society and the environment. This includes changing UK legislation on consumer charges to reduce single-use plastic waste, introduction of a new national service to support the adoption of siblings and hard-to-place children in care, and transformation of guidance for the UK emergency services. Our broad research is supported through research centres, multi-disciplinary partnerships, and strong collaboration with users, industry, NHS, charities, and the public.

The successful candidate will be associated with the Women’s Health Research Wales Centre, a Health and Social Care Research Wales funded centre with a head office in Cardiff University, and core partners at Bangor University, Swansea University and University of South Wales. The Centre will be the national hub for existing women’s health research leaders in Wales, a centre of excellence for research, innovation, co-production and leadership development. Its mission is to eliminate inequalities in the health and social care of girls, women and people assigned female at birth.

Our Teaching

We teach British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited undergraduate, MSc and professional doctorate psychology courses, as well as training a strong community of PhD students. At all levels, students can undertake professional placements with a wide variety of partners.
