Overview

Cardiff Professional Legal Studies (CPLS) offers postgraduate routes to professional qualification for solicitors and barristers, including the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), Solicitors Practice Course (SPC), and Bar Training Course (BTC). As part of the School of Law and Politics, CPLS provides nationwide assessment for duty solicitors, police station representatives, and expert witnesses.

Position Details

  • Part‑time, 0.4 FTE (14 hours per week)
  • Fixed term for one year; available immediately
  • Salary: ÂŁ51,753 – ÂŁ56,535 per annum (pro‑rate, Grade 7)

Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Design, deliver, assess and evaluate modules across the SPC, BTC, LLM Bar Training Course and GDL programmes.
  • Lead modules and contribute to curriculum development within the School of Law and Politics.
  • Supervise postgraduate masters students and support coursework and examinations.
  • Plan and coordinate external activities such as student placements, competitions and marketing events.
  • Provide pastoral care, act as personal tutor and give constructive feedback to students.
  • Manage projects and participate in committee work.

Scholarship

  • Engage in scholarly activity and disseminate research through conferences, seminars and journal publications.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams within and outside the university.
  • Advance knowledge in the area of expertise through independent research and outputs.

Other

  • Build partnerships with professional institutions, industry, public sector and academic organisations to enhance the School’s profile.
  • Participate in School administration and public events such as open days and public lectures.
  • Maintain compliance with university policies on equality, diversity, data protection, copyright, security and health & safety.
  • Engage in personal and professional development to improve performance as a Lecturer.
  • Undertake any other duties consistent with the role.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Qualified as a barrister, solicitor or legal executive.
  • Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the School’s teaching programmes, including vocational modules for the SPC, BTC, GDL and successor courses.
  • Experience in delivering legal skills modules and in designing appropriate assessment criteria.
  • Demonstrated legal practice experience and specialist knowledge in the relevant subject area.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly.
  • Capability to provide pastoral support to students and act as a personal tutor.
  • Leadership and team‑working skills to coordinate with colleagues as a module leader.
  • Ability to undertake academics‑related administration and innovate independently.

Desirable Criteria

  • Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification.
  • Evidence of networking and collaboration with practice/industry.
  • Ability to communicate and teach in Welsh.
