Overview

We are looking for Kitchen Assistants to work full-time or part-time within our nursing and care homes in Wokingham and Burghfield Common.

The role supports older adults, many with dementia, by preparing and serving nutritious meals and maintaining a clean, safe kitchen environment.

  • Suffolk Lodge – Wokingham RG40 1DH (part‑time)
  • The Hollies – Burghfield Common RG7 (full‑time)
  • Working Hours & Availability

Full‑time: 37 hours per week. Part‑time: 30 hours per week. Shift based with alternate weekend work and potential overtime for sickness or annual leave.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Cook in preparing, presenting and serving meals that meet individual dietary requirements.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety and hygiene in the kitchen and dining areas.
  • Clear away and wash up after mealtimes.
  • Promote safe working practices and adhere to health and safety regulations.
  • Build effective working relationships with colleagues to enhance the dining experience.
  • Participate in training and development programs to improve food and safety skills and nutrition knowledge.
  • Exercise knowledge of emergency and fire procedures and complete risk assessments.
  • Report faulty appliances, damaged crockery or potential hazards following established procedures.
  • Fully trained and supported on the job, including classroom sessions, online learning and shadow shifts.

Qualifications

  • City & Guilds Level 1 in Hospitality and Catering – or willingness to obtain it.
  • Food Safety Level 2 – or willingness to achieve it.
  • Must reside in the UK and hold entitlement to work (British citizenship or a valid work visa with at least 12 months remaining); no sponsorship available.
  • Previous experience in a catering or kitchen role is beneficial.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with residents and colleagues.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks safely and correctly.
  • Effective time‑management and record‑keeping skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing tasks and kitchen schedules.
