North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC) are looking to recruit a forward-thinking and motivated individual to join our team of Acute Medicine Consultants. This is a post for a Locum Consultant with specialist registration. The role will be to provide care across both our hospitals – the West Cumberland Hospital (WCH) in Whitehaven and the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle – and will primarily be job planned to work and be based in Whitehaven. This post offers the opportunity to be at the forefront of developing new and innovative approaches and services for the residents of North Cumbria, a uniquely beautiful and challenging area.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Member of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent.
  • Proof of competency in emergency and elective index cases, Special Interest or certification in any medical specialty.
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via relevant CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), relevant CESR or European Community Rights, high level of clinical experience and competence in Acute Medicine.
  • Excellent communication skills with patients, colleagues, managers and other staff.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients, commitment to and experience of teaching.
  • Interest in developing links with Primary Care.
  • Completed Higher Specialist Training (CCT) in General (Internal) Medicine, Acute Internal Medicine or evidence of equivalent competency.
  • Experience and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff, including teaching clinical skills to undergraduates.
  • Teaching of non-medical health professionals.
  • Educational qualification.
  • Research, audit and clinical governance.
  • Experience of, and commitment to, medical audit.
  • Experience of research and clinical governance, publications in relevant journals.
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research.

Acute Medicine runs two Acute Medical Units with an unselected medical take at both sites. Our team delivers same‐day emergency care services for Acute Medicine on both sites, and is involved in a wide range of transformational improvement work in this particular area. It has been an excellent time to join us in Acute Medicine as we embark on new and innovative ways of delivering our services and offer a consistently high level of quality in all we do. The Trust has won national awards for our composite workforce model at West Cumberland Hospital and there will be opportunities to be involved in the training and educational supervision of Deanery trainees at all levels should you be successful, helping to contribute to the next generation of medical professionals.

Legal Requirements

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions. The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows if applicable to the post:

  • Standard Check: £21.50 + Administration cost of £5.90 = £27.40. Deducted from salary over a 4 month period or a one‑off payment.
  • Enhanced Check: £49.50 + Administration cost of £5.90 = £55.40. Deducted from salary over a 4 month period or a one‑off payment.
