Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) – Wiltshire MHST
Start date: January 2027. This role will support children and young people with their mental health and wellbeing across South Wiltshire (Salisbury, Amesbury and surrounding schools). It involves travel within the area and occasionally throughout Wiltshire, as well as attendance at a University course in Bristol.

Interview Process

  • First stage: Video assessment (to be recorded in your own time).
  • Second stage: Face‑to‑face interviews.

Responsibilities

  • Train to deliver evidence‑based interventions for children and young people with mild to moderate mental health problems.
  • Deliver 1:1 interventions, parent‑led interventions, groups, workshops, and assemblies.
  • Collaborate with other EMHPs and CWPs to deliver group or staff training sessions.
  • Work closely with school or college mental‑health leads to develop a Whole School and College Approach to mental health and wellbeing.
  • Attend the University of Exeter course (online or hybrid) and apply learning to practice in schools.
  • Travel to Bristol when required for university teaching.
  • Complete the Mental Health Practice in Education Settings training at University of Exeter, either postgraduate or undergraduate.
  • After successful completion, apply for a permanent Band 5 position within the team.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Knowledge of CYP development and the role of family in supporting children’s emotional wellbeing, gained through academic study in child development, child wellbeing or mental health.
  • Understanding of the English educational system and the role of MHSTs in supporting children and young people.
  • Demonstrated understanding of common mental‑health problems experienced by children and young people.
  • Clear awareness of the importance of using evidence‑based interventions where possible.
  • Good basic literacy and numeracy at a minimum of Level2, with an honours degree (2:2 or above) or proof of successful study at Level5 or successful partial completion of an honours degree (Level6).
  • Self‑motivated learner able to set and progress toward learning objectives and negotiate pathways to achievement with supervisory teams.
  • Ability to learn in a variety of settings and using a variety of methods.
  • Experience working with children and young people who have mental health difficulties.
  • Experience achieving agreed targets and demonstrating outcomes.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to meet post requirements.
  • Personal qualities: ability to manage conflicting demands under pressure and strong time‑management and organisational skills.
