Overview
The trainee Human Factors Health and Safety Specialist will work within the Health and Safety Team and report to a senior specialist.
The role focuses on developing expertise in Human Factors, preparing evidence for Chartered membership, and supporting the implementation of a Human Factors strategy aligned with HSE's

Successful completion of the trainee programme leads to promotion to Human Factors Health and Safety Specialist (Grade7) after gaining full Chartership and passing an internal assessment.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a logbook of evidence and examples of Human Factors work to support Chartered membership application.
- Complete Health and Safety Management and Biological Agents training through UKHSA’s in‑house programme.
- Establish and maintain links with Human Factors professionals in other organisations and relevant professional bodies (e. g. CIEHF).
• Provide Human Factors support to
- Health and safety inspections and audits
- Risk assessments, including Safety Critical Task Analysis
- Design and construction of new high containment microbiology facilities
- Human Factors training and awareness‐raising activities
- Development of Human Factors policy, procedures and guidance
- Incident, dangerous occurrence and near‑miss investigations
- Research and policy initiatives involving Human Factors
- Carry out any other tasks and duties as reasonably required by the Corporate Health and Safety Team.
Qualifications and Experience
- Have or be nearing completion of an MSc or BSc in Human Factors/Ergonomics accredited by the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF).
- Graduate Member of the CIEHF or eligible for Graduate membership.
- Knowledge of applying Human Factors to manage Health and Safety risks in work contexts.
- Experience conducting applied Human Factors academic research.
- Proven ability to manage own learning and development.
- Desirable: Health and Safety experience supporting a duty holder or in a regulatory role.
- Desirable: Experience working in biological containment facilities.
- Desirable: Ability to design applied Human Factors research projects, particularly in biosafety.
- Desirable: Ability to deliver Human Factors training to non‑specialist audiences.
- Desirable: Experience leading Human Factors work programmes.
- Desirable: Ability to solve complex Human Factors issues and prioritise system objectives, including incident investigations.
- Desirable: Ability to champion Human Factors and influence colleagues.
- Must pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and Security Check clearance.

Salary: Senior Executive Officer (SEO) £41,983‑£48,128 (National); £44,148‑£50,121 (Outer London); £46,310‑£52,113 (Inner London).
Pay increases are through the relevant annual award.
Salary is based on office location.
