Speech and Language Therapy Assistant

Are you passionate about supporting people to rebuild their communication and swallowing following stroke and neurological illness? We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Speech and Language Therapy Assistant to join our friendly, supportive and innovative Integrated Community Stroke Service (ICSS). Working as part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, you will provide both clinical and administrative support to Speech and Language Therapists across the Early Supported Discharge (ESD), Community Stroke Team (CST) and Neurorehabilitation Team (NETT) pathways. This is an exciting opportunity to work with adults following stroke and other neurological conditions, delivering rehabilitation programmes designed by qualified Speech and Language Therapists. You will manage your own delegated caseload, support individual and group therapy sessions, and contribute to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care across Hertfordshire. The role is community-based and offers variety and autonomy, with visits taking place in patients' own homes, community venues and healthcare settings across the county. You will work closely with patients, families, therapists and the wider team to support people in achieving meaningful rehabilitation goals., As a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant, you will:

• Deliver rehabilitation programmes delegated and supervised by qualified Speech and Language Therapists.
• Manage and prioritise a delegated caseload, monitoring patient progress and reporting changes or concerns appropriately.
• Support patients with communication and swallowing difficulties following stroke and neurological conditions.
• Facilitate both individual and group therapy interventions in community settings.
• Support patients with aphasia and other communication impairments, including the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies and devices.
• Assist with the development and preparation of therapy resources, including culturally appropriate materials.
• Maintain accurate clinical records and contribute to report writing and documentation.
• Provide administrative support to the Speech and Language Therapy team as required.
• Work independently within agreed competencies while recognising when to seek guidance from qualified therapists.
• Actively contribute as a valued member of the wider Integrated Community Stroke Service multidisciplinary team.

As this is a community-based role, there is a requirement to hold a full, valid, UK driving licence and have access to a car to use for business purposes (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010).

• Educated to GCSE Level including maths and English
• Good standard of spoken and written English, NVQ level 3 in Diagnostic and Therapeutic support or equivalent, Understanding of the post and its duties
• Basic knowledge and understanding of communication disorders.
• Experience using Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook
• Understanding of the need to adhere to policies and procedures
• Basic understanding of professional standards, Previous experience working in an SLT support worker role
• Experience of working in a therapy setting
• Able to demonstrate an understanding of communication facilitation skills
• Understanding of the roles of the members of the multidisciplinary team, To work both as part of a team and independently
• Strong listening and communication skills
• Able to demonstrate empathy with patients, carers and colleagues.
• Able to communicate effectively, particularly where barriers to understanding exist
• Able to keep legible and accurate patient information and records in English
• To organise themselves and their workload
• Able to identify when to seek support
• To use a computer, Microsoft Office and learn new programmes/ applications, Responsible and reliable attitude to work
• Flexible, efficient and approachable
• Able to work without direct supervision but under the direction of qualified staff
