Job Overview
We are recruiting for a fixed‑term Speciality Doctor in Emergency Medicine, to start as soon as possible with a confirmed contract end date of 12th March 2027.
The role is based in West London and will support the Trust’s strategy to deliver excellent emergency clinical care, including involvement in the building of the new Hillingdon Hospital, due by 2027.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct clinical care for patients presenting to the Emergency Department, ensuring the maintenance of operational standards and KPIs.
- Conduct the initial assessment, management, and discharge or referral of patients, and provide timely and effective review of those subsequently admitted to the Clinical Decision Unit.
- Offer clinical advice and support to FY1s, SHO colleagues and nursing staff, ensuring appropriate prioritisation of patient care.
- Assume the role of Trauma Team Leader when the Trauma team is activated, and lead cardiac arrest responses in the Emergency Department.
- Respond to a major incident call‑out and deliver care in accordance with the Trust’s Major Incident Plan.
- Collaborate with the Nursing Shift Leader on efficient floor management, including junior staff deployment.
- Communicate accurate, timely and comprehensive information to patients, carers and General Practitioners, covering clinical coding and discharge letters.
- Liaise with departmental colleagues, specialist inpatient teams, Clinical Site Practitioners, the Psychiatric Liaison Team, Rapid Response Service, and community statutory and voluntary partners.
- Review pathology and imaging reports, initiate appropriate action, and participate in the Clinical Governance role, including quality improvement, risk management and formal complaint investigations.
Educational and Supervisory Duties
- Actively supervise final‑year medical undergraduates attached to the Department of Emergency Medicine.
- Deliver regular teaching and induction programmes for Emergency Medicine SHOs.
- Provide educational activities for Emergency Department nursing staff where appropriate.
- Continuing Professional Development
- Maintain personal professional development in line with national revalidation guidance and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.
- Meet all mandatory Trust training requirements, including valid ALS, ATLS and APLS (or EPLS or equivalent) life‑support provider status.
- Contribute to the Senior EM Training Programme and Professional Activity components of the rota.
Qualifications
- On GMC register with a licence to practice; or eligible to apply for GMC registration and hold a licence to practice.
- Minimum of 4 years post‑qualification, with at least 2 years of experience in emergency medicine.
- Rota and Working Pattern
- Participate in a rolling 24‑hour rota alongside Speciality Doctors and Specialist Registrars, with full internal cover for annual leave, study leave and bank/public holidays.
- Contractual activity: 10 programmed activities per week, comprising 9 for direct clinical care and 1 for professional activity support.
- Hospital Information
The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust operates a thriving Emergency Department, with approximately 165,000 attendances in 2019‑19, including co‑located UCC services.
In addition, the Minor Injuries Unit at our Mount Vernon Hospital site manages around 100 patients daily.
