Role Overview

Specialist Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician – Band6 (1year fixed‑term) is a deputy lead role within the Medicines Management Service, supporting the training, development and day‑to‑day supervision of pharmacy staff, and contributing to service improvement and patient safety.

Responsibilities

  • Support the operational and professional leadership of the technician‑led ward pharmacy service within the Medicines Management Service.
  • Support and contribute to the appraisal, performance review and development of Medicines Management Pharmacy Technicians (MMPTs).
  • Assist the Chief Pharmacy Technician (MMS) and Associate Chief Pharmacist – Clinical Services in the strategic development and progression of clinical pharmacy services.
  • Assist in the development, review and maintenance of clinical service policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Support the development, training and competency progression of pharmacy technicians working on wards.
  • Support, develop and deliver training and education sessions to registered healthcare professionals and non‑registered staff.
  • Contribute to the patient safety and clinical governance agenda through effective medicines management practices.
  • Lead or participate in service improvement initiatives, including Cost Improvement Programmes (CIPs) and collation and monitoring of Medicines Management Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Undertake the role of Line Manager for MMPTs and/or act as Educational Supervisor for a pre‑registration Pharmacy Technician.
  • Support medication histories, timely medicines reconciliation, medicines adherence assessments and tailored patient consultations.
  • Contribute to improved patient flow and social and community enablement.

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level3 Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills (QCF) or equivalent; GPhC registration; substantial hospital pharmacy experience; Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician certificate.
  • NVQ in Pharmacy Services Level3 or equivalent, registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • National Medicines Management Course (HEE Medsop / AIMM) or equivalent.
  • Holds or is working towards a Practice Supervisor qualification or equivalent.
  • Holds or is working towards a National Accredited Checking Qualification; evidence of commitment to CPD and an up‑to‑date CPD portfolio; Level3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment.
  • Significant post‑qualification experience in a hospital pharmacy setting; significant experience as a clinical ward technician; proven ability to manage complex teams and pharmacy staff; evidence of successful recruitment and management of significant department changes; experience in training and supervision of staff.

Skills and Experience

  • Primary Care experience and experience of managing a ward‑based or equivalent clinical service.
  • Experience of self‑medication schemes and patient medication counselling.
  • Experience of conducting or being involved with a quality improvement project.
  • Excellent knowledge of clinical pharmacy and national pharmacy service organisations.
  • Experience of audits and key performance indicators.
  • Good IT skills and knowledge of pharmacy computer systems, including Cerner and JAC.
  • Awareness of current NHS issues including national and local priorities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management, development of trust‑wide policies and management skills including leadership, teamwork and appraisals.
  • Pedagogic ability and good training, communication (written and oral), organisational, problem‑solving and management skills.
  • Excellent customer care and near‑patient service; good interpersonal, negotiation, assertiveness and delegation skills.
  • Friendly, supportive, highly motivated, confident and enthusiastic; ability to motivate others and act as a role model.
  • Aptitude for developing and implementing new procedures; effective time‑management and delegation.
