University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
We are looking for a registered or soon‑to‑be registered pharmacy technician to join our enthusiastic and motivated team based at Southampton General Hospital (SGH) and Royal South Hants Hospital (RSH).
This is a progressive band4‑5 post; current band5s are also welcome.
The post is fully supported and ideal for a pharmacy technician soon to qualify and register with the GPh C.
Responsibilities
- Dispense, label and check medications accurately.
- Issue medications to patients.
- Maintain a continuous professional development portfolio.
- Provide ward‑based medicines management service.
- Support aseptic pharmacy activities.
- Manage stock control and ordering of pharmacy supplies.
- Work antisocial hours, weekends, and bank holidays as per rota.
- Travel to and work at SGH, RSH, and other sites if required.
- Supervise staff or trainees as needed.
Qualifications
- Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPh C) or working towards registration within six months.
- BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences or NVQ Level3 (or equivalent) with appropriate underpinning knowledge.
- GCSE Maths and English A‑C or equivalent; or IELTS score 7 if overseas.
- Ability to use a range of information technology programmes.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise effectively.
- Willingness to work antisocial hours, weekends, and bank holidays.
- Flexibility to travel to and work at SGH, RSH, and other sites.
- Additional qualifications such as completed APTUK Foundation Framework, Management training, Practice Supervisor or TAQA Medicines Management qualification, PIPC or ACPT.
- Hospital pharmacy experience, including stock control and ordering.
- Experience providing ward‑based medicines management service.
- Aseptic pharmacy experience.
- Clinical trials or research experience.
- Experience using JAC or similar pharmacy‑based computer systems.
- Experience supervising staff or trainees.
- Professional Development & Training
- Supported to complete the band4/5 progressive framework with core competencies.
- Upon completion, the post will be upgraded to band5.
- Dispensary‑based training at both SGH and RSH, using competency‑based learning to dispense, label, and check accurately.
- Opportunity to rotate between the pharmacy departments at SGH and RSH.
