Screening Technicians

Overview

AAA Screening is a fast‑paced, demanding environment with the team performing more than 8,000 ultrasound scans per year.

The Screening Technician works both autonomously and as part of a team, travelling independently to and from the Royal Stoke Hospital base and community clinics across South Cheshire, North Staffordshire and South Staffordshire.

The role requires the use of a portable ultrasound machine and support equipment, full business insurance car access, and a clean, full UK driving licence.

Working hours are flexible with no fixed shifts, Monday to Friday, and core hours between 8:00 and 17:00.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform abdominal ultrasound scanning as part of the National AAA Screening Programme (NAAASP) in accordance with national and local standard operating procedures.
• Reassure and explain the screening test and its implications to men attending community AAA screening and surveillance clinics.
• Operate and manipulate ultrasound machine controls to achieve maximum image optimisation and record accurate measurements.
• Download, inspect and analyse scan data, flag abnormalities, and send results to the screening office in a confidential and timely manner.
• Obtain informed consent, address patient queries, and communicate results, including any follow‑up actions, in a clear and compassionate manner.
• Maintain communication with administrative staff, nurses, medical and screening programme staff to support patient care.
• Ensure the safe use and storage of expensive ultrasound equipment, monitor stock levels of supplies, and report faults or shortages.
• Participate in service reviews, suggest improvements, and actively contribute to the development of the screening programme.
• Adhere to infection control policies, dispose of clinic waste properly, and keep clinic rooms clean and tidy.
• Act as a mentor to new starters, provide guidance on protocol, and support colleagues in challenging situations.

Qualifications & Experience

• Good general education: 5 GCSE passes A‑C (including English Language, Mathematics and Science) or equivalent.
• Successful completion of a Level3 Diploma for Health Screeners and the associated practical assessment.
• Academic qualification at science subject GCSE Grade C or higher (Biology desirable).
• Experience in working and communicating with the public, especially in a health care environment.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and confidentiality requirements.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) and IT skills for data handling.
• Evidence of good written and spoken English, with the ability to give clear explanations.

• Relationship building with stakeholders, ability to provide support and maintain professional boundaries.
• Stress resilience: managing interruptions, emotional situations, and challenging staffing issues.
• Attention to detail, accuracy, and maintaining confidentiality in accordance with GDPR 2018.
• Additional Requirements
• Disclosure and Barring Service check (subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, 1975).
• Car owner with a clean, full UK driving licence.
• Regular travel to various health centres across the area is required.
• Physical effort: light sitting, standing and walking throughout the day, with use of VDU.
• Training & Development

Successful candidates will receive training through the Health Screening Diploma (HSD) qualification.

Upon successful completion of the Diploma, the role will transition to Band4 remuneration.

Remuneration

Band3 during the training period; subsequently Band4 after completion of the HSD qualification.
