Role Overview

We are looking for a reliable and experienced Healthcare Assistant / Phlebotomist to join our friendly, well‑organised team on a flexible sessional basis.

The role is patient‑facing and focuses primarily on venepuncture, clinical measurements and supporting the clinical team under the supervision of the GPs and nursing staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform venepuncture and collect blood samples in line with practice protocols and national guidance.
  • Ensure correct patient identification, labelling and documentation for all samples.
  • Process and prepare samples for transport or analysis, including centrifugation where trained, and maintain accurate records.
  • Manage spillages, sharps and clinical waste following correct procedures.
  • Record vital signs, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiratory rate, oxygen saturations, height, weight and BMI.
  • Perform 12‑lead ECGs accurately and to a high standard.
  • Undertake urinalysis and point‑of‑care testing as directed.
  • Act as chaperone for clinical examinations and procedures when required.
  • Support the clinical team with other delegated tasks appropriate to training and competence.
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous and legible documentation in patient records, reporting any abnormal findings or incidents promptly.
  • Carry out routine equipment checks, calibration checks and fridge temperature monitoring as directed.
  • Ensure adequate stock levels of clinical consumables and report shortages.
  • Maintain clean, tidy and well‑organised clinical rooms and adhere to infection prevention and control policies.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with patients, carers and colleagues, recognising the need for empathy and discretion.
  • Safeguard confidential information in line with the Data Protection Act 2018, UK GDPR and practice policy.
  • Comply with the practice Health and Safety policy and participate in mandatory training.
  • Support equality, diversity and rights of patients, carers and colleagues, behaving in a welcoming and non‑judgemental manner.
  • Engage in a full induction programme, mandatory training and appraisal processes, maintaining competence in all duties.
  • Contribute to quality improvement, alerting the team to issues of quality and risk.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

Previous HCA or equivalent experience in primary or secondary care; competent phlebotomy skills; experience recording clinical observations; professional and friendly manner; flexibility to cover sessions at short notice.

Desirable

ECG recording experience; Systm One experience; NVQ Level 2/3 in Health and Social Care or Care Certificate; experience of point‑of‑care testing.

Work Conditions
