An exciting opportunity is available for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion sections of Blood Sciences at University Hospitals Dorset.
Overview
The post is based at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital (in The Dorset Pathology Hub) and the successful candidate will work in the laboratory in Poole Local Services Laboratory on rotation. The department offers a wide range of diagnostic testing facilities for Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals, as well as local GP practices. It is fully UKAS accredited and an IBMS accredited training laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Rotate through all sections of the Haematology & Blood Transfusion department and participate in a 24/7 shift system.
- Conduct routine and specialised haematology, coagulation and transfusion testing using equipment such as the Beckman Coulter DxH 900, Starrs ES R analyser, TOSOH G11, Sta R Max coagulation analysers and Bio‑Rad IH500 analysers.
- Support clinical trials and the Integrated Stock Management Scheme within the Transfusion department.
- Interpret and report results at bench level, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
- Operate and maintain laboratory information systems including Winpath software and quality management software.
- Train junior staff in accordance with standard operating procedures and provide guidance on best practice.
- Maintain compliance with UKAS ISO15189, MHRA and other regulatory standards.
Qualifications & Experience
- BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
- Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist.
- Completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio (Haematology and Transfusion) or equivalent proven experience at Band6 level in Haematology/Blood Transfusion.
- Evidence of continual professional development (CPD) demonstrated at interview.
- Experience working in a UKAS ISO15189 and MHRA approved laboratory.
- Experience working shifts over a 24/7 period.
Required Skills
- Good interpretive skills at bench level with strong attention to detail.
- Proficiency with common IT software, database and spreadsheet tools.
- Familiarity with quality management systems and Winpath laboratory software.
- Ability to prioritise tasks and work quickly and accurately to provide an urgent patient‑centred service.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness and ability to learn new skills and adopt emerging technologies.
