Overview
The Welsh Bone Marrow Donor Registry (WBMDR) is looking for an enthusiastic Nurse Specialist to support stem cell donors throughout the donation pathway. The role is based at the WBMDR facility in Pontyclun, west of Cardiff, and is part of the Welsh Blood Service.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the donation pathway for stem cell donors, including initial contact, medical assessment, stem cell collection, delivery and post‑donation assessment.
- Provide counselling and obtain informed consent from donors.
- Support donors through the collection of peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) via apheresis and bone marrow aspirates.
- Work in an operating theatre environment for bone marrow harvests.
- Act as the main clinical contact for each donor, managing multiple cases simultaneously.
- Collaborate with the nursing, coordination and clinical teams to maintain high standards of care.
- Prioritise workload and adapt to changing deadlines based on patient and donor needs.
- Contribute to continuous improvement, auditing and quality assurance activities.
Qualifications & Experience
- Registered nurse with current NMC registration.
- Degree or equivalent level of post‑qualification experience.
- Specialist knowledge of haematology and experience working with patients or donors in a clinical capacity.
- Experience of clinical management and understanding of clinical effectiveness, best practice, audit and GMP.
- Experience of HTA, ISO:15189 or FACT‑JACIE accreditation.
- Experience of bone marrow aspiration and apheresis (highly desirable). Full training will be provided if needed.
- Excellent communication, judgement and organisational skills.
