Overview

TEWV pharmacy team are recruiting a dispensing assistant to join our pharmacy at West Park Hospital, Darlington.

This role offers progression from Band2 to Band3 senior pharmacy assistant upon meeting the relevant criteria.

Responsibilities

  • Work under pharmacy SOPs to provide medicines topping up and stock management for wards.
  • Dispense medication against prescriptions and requisitions, calculating appropriate doses for inpatient and outpatient patients.
  • Ensure prescriptions and requisitions are legal and safe in accordance with SOPs.
  • Receive medication supplies from wholesalers and record electronically; remove unwanted medication from wards and determine suitability for return or destruction per policy.
  • Dispense controlled drugs, forward stock and named patients in compliance with all legal requirements.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and competency in required skills, undertake statutory and mandatory training, and manage personal development in line with line manager.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience of stock management in a customer care setting.
  • Experience of working supportively within a team and within a pharmacy environment.
  • Proficiency with appropriate software packages, including Excel and Word.
  • Telephone, email and internet experience.
  • Basic general education; GCSE grade D or above in English and Maths.
  • NVQ or equivalent level2 pharmacy qualification.
  • Key Skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, both oral and written, and good telephone manner.
  • Strong organisational and time‑management skills.
  • Manual dexterity for medication handling.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under supervision and independently as appropriate.
  • Capacity to receive, interpret, analyse and deliver information effectively.
  • Customer‑care orientation.
