Position

A great role for a reliable, highly motivated and enthusiastic person to undertake caretaking & maintenance duties for Anchor Healthcare Centre. To work with the Leadership Team, to provide a timely and responsive service for the implementation and maintenance of all Facilities & Building, Health & Safety, Fire Safety and Building Security needs. The role also includes areas such as Waste Management, Plant Room, Facilities Management and Grounds Management. Our practice is situated in a green building with a Ground Source Heating/Cooling System, Rainwater Harvesting and Solar Panels so knowledge of these is helpful but training is given.

Daily oversight of the surgery premises, ensuring fire exits etc are kept clear and safe, deliveries are stored away as appropriate and all building systems are in good working order is an essential element of the job. Being available out of hours is a vital part of the role responding to alarms (security / fire etc) whenever necessary is an integral part of the role.

To ensure that the Practice buildings, facilities and grounds are maintained to the highest possible standard, are in a proper working order ensuring compliance with relevant Health, Safety & Welfare legislation ensuring to provide a safe working environment for all Staff, Patients and Practice Visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct contractors to specified work and monitor progress and quality; report on the standard and completion of all work.
  • Seek quotes, estimates and tenders from recognised contractors for all repairs and development work to meet the standards set by the Practice Partners.
  • Liaise with the external cleaning contractor to ensure premises are prepared and cleaned for daily use, including after Practice events.
  • Maintain fire prevention and security systems – manage keys, fobs, computers and other equipment; keep premises secure.
  • Ensure team members are trained appropriately for all relevant systems.
  • Provide lead responsibility for premises security; maintain protocol for out‑of‑hours contact arrangements including operation of fire and burglar alarm.
  • Set up a system for out‑of‑hours call‑outs, establish a staff rota and provide staff training.
  • Operate and manage the Practice CCTV system and prepare digital recordings when requested by police.
  • Maintain an up‑to‑date library of plans, servicing schedules and other data relating to sites and infrastructure.
  • Undertake small repairs and maintenance of building fabric, fixtures & fittings; call in skilled maintenance staff for larger or complex repairs.
  • Assist in minor works with other trades as required.
  • Oversee plant room equipment, maintenance and repairs.
  • Move and install furniture, equipment and fixtures & fittings as needed.
  • Ensure regulatory checks and maintenance needs are met within specified timelines.
  • Take regular meter readings and keep records.
  • Manage building waste and ensure collections are carried out.
  • Supervise staff, visitors and secure areas; monitor alarm systems and manage keys.
  • Supervise car park areas and grounds, including sweeping and gritting.
  • Serve as building Fire Officer and liaise with Fire Contractors.
  • Oversee Deliveries Protocol – ensure deliveries are delivered to the intended recipient and store clinical stock appropriately under direction of the Clinical Stocking Lead.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Previous experience in a similar role.
  • Likely to come from a property trade such as electrical or plumbing.
  • Reasonable knowledge & skills in painting, decorating & DIY.
  • Good standard of English and Maths – GCSE qualification desirable.
  • Knowledge/training in Fire Safety and Health & Safety.
  • Knowledge/training in Manual Handling.
  • Knowledge/training in Infection Control & Legionella.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Methodical, reliable, practical with attention to detail.
  • Problem solver, willing to perform tasks as needed.
  • Able to work on own initiative and manage time.
  • Able to communicate and liaise with patients and other service users as appropriate.
  • Physically fit for moving, bending and climbing stepladders.
  • Physically fit for lifting within manual handling rules (trolley equipment provided).

About the Practice

We are a large, friendly 19,000 patient practice on the south coast, 15 minutes from Brighton. The team comprises 18 GPs (Partners and Salaried), 15 Nurses and HCA's, an administration and reception team, and a Pharmacy team. The practice is environmentally friendly, housed in a modern low‑carbon emission building with Ground Source Heat Pump and Solar Panels. A shower and a bike shed are available for staff use.
