Overview

The cellular pathology department at Milton Keynes Hospital Foundation Trust is expanding its capacity and offers a full‑time consultant post.

The role is intended to replace a current consultant and will become part of a team of eight consultant cellular pathologists.

The position is available to those who are able to work full time; part‑time appointments may be considered on a personal basis with appropriate job content modification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide histopathology and non‑gynaecological cytology services in collaboration with the team of Consultant Cellular Pathologists for the University Hospital Foundation Trust and local GP services.
  • Share an equal (pro‑rata) portion of the cellular pathology workload in histopathology and cytology, ensuring a reliable and expeditious service.
  • Participate in private histopathology on a weekly rota basis (optional).
  • Allocate time in a 10‑P. A. job plan: DCC 7.5 P. A. and SPA up to 2.5 P. A., including 1 P. A. core SPA for job‑planning, appraisal, revalidation, CME, and departmental meetings.
  • Utilise non‑core SPA for activities such as educational supervision, research, leadership, quality improvement, consultant development programmes, and skill acquisition, as mutually agreed in job planning.
  • Attend multidisciplinary team meetings, perform diagnostic reporting, and contribute to internal peer case reviews and external referrals.
  • Support administrative duties related to case reports and NHS autopsies.
  • Adapt allocation of SPA and P. A. as required in consultation with the Head of Department, CSU Lead, and Trust leadership.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Medical degree and FRCPath or equivalent.
  • Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC); candidates must hold a licence to practise or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • UK‑trained applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT); non‑UK trained applicants must provide evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
  • Broad experience in all aspects of cellular pathology, including effective and safe management of outpatients, elective and emergency cases.
  • Significant postgraduate experience, such as specialist trainee or senior registrar, with equivalent responsibility and training potential.
  • Sufficient experience in histopathology and cytopathology, including fine‑needle aspirate reporting.
  • Special experience in surgical pathology and cytopathology, excluding cervical cytology.
  • Experience in autopsy procedures.
  • Proficient information technology and computer skills.
  • Understanding of clinical risk management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with patients, colleagues, and staff at all levels.
  • Background in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research; evidence of training in medical education is highly desirable.
  • Leadership and management experience, with the ability to work independently and as part of the Pathology Division.
  • Capacity to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients.
  • Good health and demonstration of Hepatitis B immunisation, including negative Hepatitis B antigen status.
