Role Overview

Applications are invited for a full‑time Consultant Psychiatrist working within the Highbury Hospital Inpatient Assessment and Treatment Unit (5 programmed activities) and the Nottingham City Community Intellectual Disability Team (CIDT, 5 programmed activities).

The community component of the post covers two boroughs within Nottingham City.

This newly re‑configured Consultant post carries 10 programmed activities.

The permanent position provides a dynamic and rewarding opportunity to lead and shape mental‑health care delivery for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide responsible clinical leadership for the inpatient ATU and give consultant psychiatrist input via clinics at Highbury Hospital and in the community.
  • Manage 6 beds on the Orion system.
  • Coordinate resident doctors rotating into the ward, including Foundation Year1, Foundation Year2, Core trainees and Higher trainees.
  • Play a key role in routine and urgent patient assessment and management, GP liaison, contributing to multidisciplinary meetings and medicolegal work (MHA/Sec12).
  • Lead clinical supervision and appraisal of junior medical staff in line with Trust personnel policies, including competence assessment under the Modernising Medical Careers framework.
  • Ensure junior staff work within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
  • Carry out administrative duties associated with patient care, record clinical activity accurately and submit promptly to the Information Department.
  • Participate in service and business planning for the locality and, where appropriate, for the whole mental‑health service.
  • Engage in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.
  • Maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section12(2) approval, and abide by professional codes of conduct.
  • Take part annually in a job plan review with the clinical manager.
  • Work with local managers and professional colleagues to ensure efficient running of services and contribute to financial management.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • MRCPsych or MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months.
  • Approved clinician status or able to achieve within 3months of appointment.
  • Approved under S12 or able to achieve within 3months of appointment.
  • Holds and will use a valid UK driving licence or provides evidence of a proposed alternative.

Skills and Professional Attributes

  • Excellent knowledge in specialty and clinical skills using the bio‑psycho‑social perspective.
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty; make decisions based on evidence and experience.
  • Wide range of specialist and sub‑specialist experience relevant to the post within the NHS or comparable service.
  • Academic skills and a commitment to lifelong learning; able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.
  • Ability to work in and lead a team and demonstrate commitment to shared leadership and collaborative working.
  • Continual participation in professional development, research, service evaluation and clinical audit and quality improvement programmes.
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement (awards, prizes, presentations, publications).
  • Experience leading clinical audits leading to service change or improved outcomes for patients.

Leads clinical audits, research and service evaluation activities and participates actively in CPD.
