Cardiac Surgery Chief Perfusionist in Nottingham

Cardiac Surgery at Nottingham University is one of the two tertiary centres in the East Midlands for the management of patients requiring cardiac surgery treatment including trauma.

We have five substantive consultants and perform more than 600 procedures a year.

Our services include minimally invasive procedures and complex mitral and aortic programmes.

Chief Perfusionist (CP) – Responsibilities

The CP is responsible for providing professional leadership and the operational management of the Perfusion Department, ensuring efficient use of resources and the highest standards of patient care.

The CP develops and maintains the well‑being of all perfusion team members, performs cardiopulmonary bypass procedures in adult cardiac surgeries, and commits to the on‑call rota.

Additionally, the CP balances clinical and managerial duties to meet service delivery targets.

The role includes senior clinical and professional leadership, strategic planning, workforce development, budget management, governance, quality and risk oversight, day‑to‑day service delivery, capacity and resource optimisation, education and training of staff, and active participation in Trust-wide initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience

• Post Graduate Diploma / BSC / MSC in Perfusion Science or equivalent, accredited by the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland and registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.
• Proven leadership skills and recognised leadership/management qualification or relevant experience.
• Extensive experience as a senior clinical Perfusionist or deputy chief Perfusionist.
• Extensive post‑registration experience working effectively in a multi‑professional environment.
• Extensive working knowledge of routine and specialised clinical techniques.
• Supervision of trainees.
• Evidence of taking responsibility for own and others’ actions.
• Experience in managing staff and services.
• Project management experience.
• Developing training programmes.
• Participation in research, seminars, presentations.
• Relevant professional development.
