The successful candidate will be appointed as a Registrar in General Surgery at James Paget University Hospital, Norfolk. This role supports junior trainees, provides on‑call surgical cover, and is involved in ward, theatre, outpatient and emergency care, all under consultant supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day‑to‑day support to junior staff and cover surgical calls day and night.
  • Assist with ward rounds, theatre sessions, outpatient clinics, admissions and discharges under consultant supervision.
  • Participate in the full shift surgical rota, delivering routine and emergency surgical care.
  • Make independent surgical decisions in appropriate situations.
  • Engage in departmental audits, teaching activities and research, including patient recruitment for trials and data collection.
  • Lead and develop multidisciplinary team (MDT) sessions and promote teamwork.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to trainees.
  • Seek further training in special interests and advanced surgical procedures.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Fully GMC registered with licence to practice.
  • MBBS or equivalent; MRCS or equivalent essential.
  • Experience in general surgery and ability to plan and develop service delivery.
  • Willingness to lead a multi‑disciplinary team and balance departmental and personal objectives.
  • Strong organisational skills, awareness of own limitations and ability to seek senior advice when needed.
  • Sound clinical knowledge and judgement, with ability to apply research outcomes to practice.
  • Experience in clinical audit or quality improvement projects.
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching, including formal teaching skills training and experience with junior staff and medical students.
  • Excellent communication skills, computer literacy and the ability to establish good working relationships with patients, carers and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Motivated, trustworthy, well‑organised, enthusiastic and able to work under pressure.
  • Commitment to personal and professional development, with understanding of patient confidentiality and data protection.
  • Full immunisation status in accordance with Occupational Health requirements.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Records Bureau disclosure, DBS (formerly CRB) check and Rehabilitation of Offenders Act submission if applicable.
  • Eligibility to work in the United Kingdom.
