About the Role

The Plastic Surgery department works across multiple sites, providing outpatient clinics and inpatient/day‑case treatment at Darlington Memorial Hospital, University Hospital of North Durham (UHND), Bishop Auckland Hospital, Shotley Bridge Hospital, Sedgefield Community Hospital and Chester‑Le‑Street Hospital.

The post is based at UHND with clinics and theatres at Darlington Memorial Hospital and Bishop Auckland in addition to UHND.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a comprehensive Plastic Surgery Service and reconstructive services to the people of South Durham, Bishop Auckland and Darlington.
  • Provide clinical care of patients in charge and ensure effective department functioning.
  • Accountable to the General Manager & Clinical Lead for Plastic Surgery for resource management.
  • Supervise junior staff professionally and educationally.
  • Participate in postgraduate teaching of medical staff, undergraduate teaching and training of all grades of staff.
  • Engage in research activities, with limited research funding available following successful applications.
  • Ensure completion of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and attend weekly half‑day educational sessions.
  • Participate in clinical audit and governance arrangements in line with national and local guidelines.
  • Provide free of charge opinion and statement of facts on patient claims against the Trust.
  • Deputise for colleagues in case of leave, study leave or sickness, ensuring continuous patient care.

Qualifications

  • Full and specialist registration with the GMC (Licence to Practice).
  • Interest in skin cancer surgery and upper limb surgery.
  • Experience of microsurgery and free flap reconstruction preferred.
  • Completed FRCS (Plast) or equivalent and on the General Medical Council Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview.
  • Good overall level of experience of elective plastic surgery, all aspects of plastics trauma and hand surgery including microsurgical reconstruction.
  • Good level of hands‑on experience in complex hand cases and skin cancer surgery.
  • Management skills, audit skills and evidence of previous involvement in clinical audit.
  • Teaching skills, including evidence of teaching junior staff and involvement in clinical guideline development.
  • Proven ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team, liaise with colleagues in other specialties and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to cope with stress, good discipline and motivation, and ability to travel independently across sites.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Additional Requirements
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within 6 months of attaining CCT in the specialty at time of interview.
