The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the provision of a high‑quality, accessible information and support service for patients with cancer, their carers, families and all affected by cancer.
The role includes facilitating access to accurate, up‑to‑date information and delivering compassionate, person‑centred support in line with Macmillan Cancer Support principles.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage, supervise and develop a band 5 Macmillan Information and Support Service Deputy Manager.
- Recruit, manage, supervise and develop volunteers/trainees to support the Macmillan Information and Support Counselling service.
- Manage, supervise and apply for funding for the hypnotherapy service to support patients’ psychological needs.
- Ensure service users receive up‑to‑date, high‑quality information consistent with best practice in cancer care and treatment.
- Identify new initiatives to enhance service provision and maintain or improve standards.
- Maintain effective communication networks and working relationships with other healthcare professionals to integrate the Cancer Information and Support Centre services with those of the Trust.
- Collaborate with other information services personnel, the Cancer Alliance and the Christie’s at Leighton.
- Participate in research, audit and service review to monitor and maintain standards of care.
- Receive and answer direct queries about health, social, practical and psychological care for patients, the worried well and their families (face‑to‑face, written, telephone, e‑mail and video) and signpost to relevant services.
- Operational Tasks
- Act as a specialist cancer resource, providing knowledge and advice for all.
- Implement operational policies for the Trust regarding safeguarding concerns.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience working within a Macmillan environment.
- Strong communication skills at all levels.
- Advanced experience in writing standard operating protocols and governance evaluations.
- Specialist interest in counselling and psychological support.
- Disclosure and Barring Service check and compliance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
