The Deputy Chief Nurse provides strategic, professional and clinical nursing leadership across the Trust, working in partnership with the Chief Nurse to deliver the Trust’s quality, safety and workforce objectives.

The post holder promotes excellence in nursing practice, education, patient experience and workforce development, and ensures the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate care.

Responsibilities

  • Lead clinical, professional and educational nursing governance, quality, patient safety and experience programmes.
  • Manage the safeguarding, infection control, workforce and education teams as line manager.
  • Support organisational transformation, service improvement and compliance with national standards, legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Drive innovation, research, quality improvement and the development of a positive, inclusive culture that places patients and their families at the centre of care.
  • Provide visible leadership to the nursing workforce and act as a senior nurse leader both within the Trust and externally.
  • Oversee financial and budgetary management, performance management and staffing establishment planning.
  • Prepare and present reports, guidelines, policies and standard operating procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Registered Nurse with evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Postgraduate degree level education or equivalent experience.
  • Management or leadership qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Significant experience in a senior nursing leadership role and high-level expert nursing knowledge.
  • Demonstrable success in delivering change, performance improvement and benchmarking.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement methodologies and experience managing serious incidents and HR/disciplinary processes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to influence, motivate and energise others.
  • Excellent negotiating, influencing and people management skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Teams) and experience of service and quality improvement programmes.
  • Experience of supporting learners in practice and analysing safe staffing data.
