Overview

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) is expanding its Geriatrics services and seeks enthusiastic Consultant Geriatricians to join the team.

The post offers flexibility across acute and community settings, supporting service transformation for older people across North East London.

Responsibilities

  • Lead inpatient care on an acute geriatric ward, typically caring for around 15 patients.
  • Deliver Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment through community and urgent assessment clinics at the Ageing Well Centre.
  • Support and develop admission avoidance initiatives, including the Consultant‑led Frailty Virtual Ward and Frailty Line.
  • Contribute to service development across Geriatrics, aligned to a sub‑specialty area of interest.
  • Participate in the development of Dementia, Delirium, or Orthogeriatric pathways.
  • Participate in Movement Disorders clinics and advanced therapy MDTs, including DBS and botulinum toxin clinics.
  • Lead undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
  • Supervise and teach junior doctors, IMTs, GP trainees, fellows, and registrars.
  • Participate actively in clinical governance, audit, teaching, and quality improvement.

Qualifications

  • Hold, or be within six months of, a CCT in Geriatric Medicine (GIM considered).
  • Hold a MRCP or equivalent specialist qualification.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility for entry within six months of Advisory Appointments Committee date) for either Geriatric Medicine or G(I)Medicine.
  • Higher specialist training in Geriatrics and G(I)Medicine.
  • Experience in Acute Frailty Services.
  • Broad experience in Geriatrics and G(I)Medicine.
  • Ability to organise and deliver a teaching programme.
  • Appropriate higher degree (e. g., MD, Ph D or equivalent).
  • Evidence of participation in research (peer‑reviewed publications, etc.).
  • Experience in service development.
  • Academic & Research Opportunities
  • Collaborate on research focused on healthy ageing, frailty, and long‑term conditions.
  • Contribute to the development of academic Geriatrics within the Trust.
  • Support innovation, evaluation, and evidence‑based service redesign.
