Job Overview
We are seeking a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon to join our dynamic and dedicated clinical team at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.
This full‑time (11.75PA) post is in general cardiac surgery.
The role offers opportunities for sub‑specialty development in line with future advances and the Trust’s requirements.
Applicants will receive full secretarial support, a personal computer, training where required, and office accommodation in line with other consultants in the unit.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert clinical opinion on a range of cardiac problems in emergency and elective situations.
- Take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.
- Deliver and oversee clinical teaching at postgraduate level, including logbook evidence of teaching junior colleagues and attendance of the Training the Trainer Course.
- Plan and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists; lead a surgical firm.
- Participate in audit management (completed audit cycle) and apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems.
- Take part in research, quality improvement activities and contribute to the annual appraisal process.
- Key Qualifications & Experience
- Full GMC registration entry (or planned entry) on the GMC Specialist Register via a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT date by August2026), Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR), or European Community Rights.
- A higher cardiothoracic specialist surgical qualification (FRCS or FECTS) or equivalent.
- Postgraduate degree (e. g., MSc, MD, Ph D) or postgraduate diploma (e. g., PGCert).
- Minimum 6years of cardiothoracic surgery experience and clinical training equivalent to gaining UK CCT in cardiothoracic surgery.
- Evidence of ability to manage and lead a surgical firm, organise outpatient priorities, and maintain high quality standards.
- Evidence of teaching experience, audit management, research application, teamwork, and communication skills.
- Commitment to Continuing Medical Education.
- Additional Information
The on‑call rota for Cardiac Surgery is 1‑in‑10 with a Category A frequency payment.
The workload will be driven by the job planning process and reviewed by the Surgical Clinical Lead, Divisional Head of Operations and the Medical Director.
The Trust supports annual appraisal, routine GMC revalidation and provides mentorship/preceptorship for the successful candidate.
The Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides adult cardiothoracic services to a catchment area of approximately 2.9million people and is one of the largest in the country, performing up to 2,200 heart procedures and 1,500 thoracic procedures annually.
