We are seeking an experienced, dynamic and compassionate senior midwife to join our labour ward team as a band 7 co‑ordinator.
This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic midwife with strong clinical leadership, excellent communication skills and a passion for providing safe, high‑quality woman‑centred care.
Responsibilities
- Act as a role model for the multidisciplinary team, fostering a supportive culture that reflects the Trust values.
- Lead the daily operational management of the labour ward, ensuring the delivery of outstanding care to our service users.
- Provide visible clinical leadership and coordinate all activity on the labour ward, maintaining oversight of patient safety, acuity and an appropriate skill mix.
- Work closely with obstetric, anaesthetic and neonatal teams to deliver effective multidisciplinary care.
- Mentor and support junior midwives, students and new starters, fostering professional growth and confidence.
- Ensure compliance with Trust policies, documentation standards and national maternity safety initiatives.
- Participate in quality improvement and audit activities.
- Coordinate the day‑to‑day operation of the labour ward and oversee the delivery of high‑quality, safe and effective care focused on improving outcomes and experiences for parents, families and carers.
- Maintain own knowledge, skills and competencies and act as a clinical expert to disseminate specialist skills and knowledge to others.
- Manage midwifery and support staff within the clinical area to maintain smooth running of the service.
- Enhance women/birthing people’s experience of care and ensure that their needs are placed at the centre of care delivery.
- Contribute to the delivery of the organisation’s objectives by improving clinical outcomes, increasing productivity, efficiency and quality of care delivery.
- Act as an autonomous practitioner in normal pregnancy, birth and the post‑natal period and in the care of neonates, detecting abnormal conditions in mother and baby, referring appropriately and undertaking emergency measures when required.
Qualifications
- Registered midwife with degree level or equivalent experience.
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
- Mentorship/Practice Assessor qualification.
- Evidence of other professional managerial qualifications.
- NLS Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics qualification.
- Recent experience in an intrapartum setting.
- Knowledge and experience of risk management.
- Understanding of complaints and conflict management.
- Evidence of previous management experience.
- Evidence of initiating and implementing quality improvement initiatives.
- Ability to lead a team.
- Comprehensive midwifery experience, including both high‑risk and low‑risk birth.
- Excellent competencies in suturing, cannulation, venepuncture and emergency care.
- Ability to foster a positive learning environment.
