Overview

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Foundation Trust (UHMBT) wants to provide sustainable high quality medical services that fit with the Better Care Together integrated model of care – high quality specialist hospital services wrapping around community based teams to deliver responsive specialist expertise within both acute hospital and community settings and helping to keep people well and to manage their long term conditions closer to home.

We work as a multi‑disciplinary team and you will have the opportunity to help improve our pathways of care for our patients at a time of exciting service review and development.

As a Trust we actively support you to develop your knowledge and skills via our Annual Development Review programme and provide support for external courses.

Main Duties

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our rapidly developing and innovative podiatry team.

In this role you will be responsible for delivering a high quality, accessible and timely evidence‑based service for patients across the Morecambe Bay area and for the increased/high‑risk caseload.

You will need to be an excellent communicator and able to work independently and confidently.

Newly qualified podiatrists may be considered for a developmental role (annex 21).

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver a high quality, accessible and timely evidence‑based service for patients.
  • Provide care to the increased/high‑risk caseload across the Morecambe Bay area.
  • Serve as an excellent communicator who can work independently and confidently.
  • Teach and train colleagues, students, health‑care professionals, patients and the public.
  • Accurately assess, test and diagnose complex foot pathologies within the specialist eligibility criteria of the service and field of practice.
  • Develop evidence‑based treatment plans and patient management based on the above.
  • Demonstrate evidence‑based practice and stay aware of latest clinical developments and research.
  • Communicate effectively and partner with patients and the general public, especially regarding foot‑health education.
  • Work within a multi‑disciplinary team and liaise with other health‑care professionals.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree or equivalent in Podiatric Medicine.
  • Local anaesthesia certificate.
  • HCPC registration.
  • Post‑graduate NHS work experience, including experience treating high‑risk patients.
  • Experience teaching/training of colleagues, students, health‑care professionals, patients or the public.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of high risk patient care (assessment, diagnosis and treatment/management) – e. g., diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, wound care and biomechanics, gained through postgraduate study, CPD or rotation packages.
  • Ability to manage and treat high‑risk patients who require a level of assessment underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience.
  • Knowledge of ulcer and wound dressings, off‑loading and Doppler ultrasound interpretation.
  • Understanding of medical conditions and pathophysiology, pharmacology and biochemistry interpretation.
  • Knowledge of medical, radiological and surgical interventions.
  • Knowledge of current national and local strategies, clinical guidelines and legislation relating to the delivery of podiatry and advanced podiatry practice.
  • Must be able to travel to meet the needs of the service.
  • Flexibility and commitment to the job.
  • Good interpersonal skills – effective listening, speaking and communicating complex information appropriate to the needs of the recipient.
  • Approachability – demonstrating a friendly and open manner that facilitates communication.
  • Enthusiastic positive attitude – flexible approach to changing requirements to meet service needs.

Work Environment

We operate from three main hospitals – Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal – as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital, GP Practices, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI provide a range of general hospital services, with full emergency departments, critical/coronary care units and various consultant‑led services.

WGH offers a range of general hospital services, together with an urgent treatment centre for non‑life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery.

In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
