Job Overview
This is a replacement Consultant post within the multi-disciplinary stroke and TIA team at Princess Royal University Hospital.
The post will involve a significant commitment to teaching, training, and service provision, and will be subject to review within three months of commencement.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide first‑class clinical service for stroke and TIA patients, including management of hyperacute stroke patients and use of reperfusion therapies.
- Maintain a regular weekday daytime and evening on‑call commitment for stroke services and a 1:6 weekend daytime on‑call rota.
- Provide additional out‑of‑hours on‑call work (1 in 12 night time on‑call cross‑site, Category A).
- Cover the unit on a rota basis for 24hours, 7days a week, including colleagues’ annual leave and short‑term sickness.
- Carry out clinical supervision of junior medical and dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
- Perform teaching, examination and accreditation duties; contribute to continuing professional development and clinical governance initiatives.
- Lead outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group management team.
- Contribute to the Care Group’s research interests, audit programmes, morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical governance programmes and learning from deaths.
- Take an active role in formulating, implementing and monitoring the Care Group’s business plan and participate in service development discussions with internal and external agencies.
- Ensure all clinical activity is delivered within the contracted level of service and operating plan.
- Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty, fostering projects that support post‑qualification education and ongoing training.
- Support staff productivity and job satisfaction, including involvement in the appraisal process for peers and junior colleagues.
- Perform Care Group management duties as agreed with the department or clinical director.
- Comply with all Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
- Plan and execute protective interventions consistently with evidence‑based practice and patient safety.
- Participate in the Trust’s 7‑day consultant‑led service provision.
Essential Qualifications
- Full MRCP (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians).
- Full registration with GMC and name on the GMC Specialist Register at the start of appointment.
- Within 6months of CCT or final stages of portfolio pathway application on the day of interview; otherwise not considered.
Desirable Qualifications
- Higher degree or diploma (e. g., MD).
- Specialist fellowship or equivalent experience in stroke or a linked specialty such as geriatric medicine or neurology (including Certificate of Completion of Training, CESR, or equivalent).
- Experience in day‑to‑day organisation of stroke services in a teaching hospital.
- Management and leadership qualifications or courses.
- Audit and quality improvement training or completed audit projects.
- Clinical research experience and publication of relevant articles or case reports.
- Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation.
- Registration & Interview Eligibility
- Full GMC registration with specialist status on the date of appointment.
- Applicant must be within 6months of CCT or final stages of portfolio pathway application, or fully registered on the GMC Specialist Register on interview day.
