Substantive Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine – Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust

We provide comprehensive critical care services across St George's, St Helier, and Epsom Hospitals, serving a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey.

Ten‑year (10 PA) contract: 8.3 days per clinical contract (DCCs) and 1.7 days per supplementary activity (SPAs) including revalidation, educational supervision, and clinical governance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide full and independent clinical care of ICU patients.
  • Contribute to weekly Morbidity & Mortality meetings, monthly ICU Consultant and Clinical Governance meetings, and divisional Quality and Audit meetings.
  • Assist with teaching programmes, including bedside echocardiography and simulation training.
  • Lead clinical audits, quality improvement programmes, implementation of change and monitoring compliance.
  • Support critical care transfers and training.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Specialist registration in Intensive Care Medicine (sole or within 6 months of achievement).
  • EDIC and/or FFICM and/or equivalent.
  • License to practice with the General Medical Council.
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
  • Teaching, training of junior doctors and undergraduates.
  • Experience in bedside ultrasound/echocardiography accreditation and simulation training.
  • Post‑graduate research and publications in peer‑reviewed literature.
  • CESR/portfolio pathway experience (or ability to pursue).
  • Strong organisational, prioritising, delegating and management skills.
  • Ability to work productively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Effective verbal and written communication; able to discuss treatment options with patients in an understandable manner.
  • Ability to cope under pressure.
  • Teaching and presentation skills; IT skills.
  • Working Hours & Shift Pattern

Weekly consultant of the week in St Helier ICU (08:00‑18:00 h daily, with overnight on‑calls at weekends).

Five days in Epsom HDU (08:00‑18:00 h).

Five second on‑call shifts in St Helier ICU (08:00‑21:00 h on site, 21:00‑08:00 h on‑call from home within 30‑minute travel distance).

Training & Development

Accredited for FICM Stage 1, 2 and 3 training.

Opportunities to negotiate an additional 1 PA in a complementary specialty or subspecialise within ICU.

Development of CESR‑training pathways in collaboration with St George's Hospital.

Expansion of echocardiogram and simulation training.
