Job Overview This is an excellent opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our team of diverse, talented healthcare professionals to deliver care that is efficient and deeply centred on the patient.
This newly created post, funded to expand our healthcare services within our prison portfolio, will require working across two category C prisons: HMP Erlestoke and HMP Guy's Marsh, both housing sentenced prisoners.
Due to the stability of their populations, there is scope for transformational work in service users’ lives within a team and prison setting.
The prison population is complex from a mental health perspective, with SMI, neurodevelopmental disorders, substance misuse, trauma and personality disorder over‑represented relative to the general population.
Work Schedule 2 days at HMP Erlestoke 2 days at HMP Guy's Marsh The post holder will have 2.5 SPA allocated for teaching, training, clinical management, governance, service development and other relevant activities.
Flexibility is encouraged: we are open to varied working patterns, days and number of part‑time or full‑time positions.
Key Responsibilities Provide medical leadership to the mental health in‑reach teams at each site, with significant input from psychology to address trauma and personality disorders.
Work within a trauma‑informed model alongside a dedicated substance misuse service (Change Grow Live).
The Consultant Psychiatrist will assess and manage pharmacological treatment for chronic psychotic illness, mood disorders, ADHD and other conditions as required.
Assess and review prisoners; develop and implement individualized management plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and prisoners.
Actively lead or chair MDT meetings and formulate management plans incorporated into care plans.
Ensure treatment aligns with NICE, Royal College of Psychiatrists, General Medical Council standards and guidelines.
Act as a Section 12(2) approved doctor for Mental Health Act assessments.
Liaise with external services to arrange CPAs, aftercare plans, transfers to hospital and other agencies (Mappa, police, probation).
Provide expert advice and guidance for complex mental states and risk management.
Advocate for necessary resources, including staffing.
Participate in administrative and management duties, directorate and Trust-wide tasks.
Engage in clinical governance, audit, medical advisory committees and other relevant committees.
Adhere to Trust policies and the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Good Psychiatric Practice and the GMC’s Good Medical Practice.
Maintain Continuous Professional Development through RCP CPD Programme, peer group meetings and professional/academic conferences.
Receive annual job planning and appraisals.
