Overview

The Deputy Head Orthoptist will support the Head Orthoptist in the operational management, service development, clinical governance, and education of the Orthoptic team within a busy Orthoptic service in Milton Keynes University Hospital.

The role combines clinical practice with leadership responsibilities, contributing to high‑quality, patient‑centred care across a range of ophthalmic subspecialties.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the operational element of the Orthoptic service.
  • Deputise for the Head Orthoptist in managerial duties as required.
  • Provide clinical and professional leadership to the Orthoptic service.
  • Deliver autonomous Orthoptic care to paediatric and adult patients within the hospital and other locations when required.
  • Assess, diagnose, manage and treat a wide range of ophthalmic and ocular motility disorders.
  • Undertake specialised Orthoptic clinic roles, including Stroke, Orthoptic screening lead, intravitreal injections, ECLO, biometry clinics, and assessment of children with additional needs.
  • Independently assess and manage complex neurological patients, referring to the Consultant Ophthalmologist as necessary.
  • Participate in departmental education programmes, training undergraduate students, pre‑registration optometrists, junior doctors, health visitors, school nurses and others.
  • Provide assessment, diagnosis, management and treatment for paediatric and adult new and follow‑up patients.
  • Develop and manage specialised programmes of care appropriate to individual patients, using clinical reasoning and a wide range of treatment skills.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and carers, obtaining informed consent to the recommended treatment plan.
  • Adhere to national and local guidelines, including clinical governance and safeguarding responsibilities.

Qualifications

BSc (Hons) Orthoptics or equivalent.

  • Registered with the HCPC.
  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in healthcare leadership/management.
  • Medical Exemptions qualification.
  • Completion of the BIOS Clinical Tutors Course.
  • Required Experience & Skills
  • Significant post‑qualification experience in all aspects of clinical Orthoptics.
  • Demonstrable experience as a clinical lead in an orthoptic service.
  • Ongoing CPD and audit experience.
  • Experience working with children with special educational needs.
  • Advanced Orthoptic skills for complex and sensitive cases.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and current practice guidelines.
  • Awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and legal duties of the profession.
  • Experience in research and in undertaking intravitreal injections.
  • Proficiency in biometry and immersion procedures as part of the cataract service.
  • Experience in stroke service delivery.
  • Teaching and supervision experience (medical/orthoptic students).
  • Experience in formulating policies and guidelines, including EHCPs.
  • Strong computer literacy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to liaise with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Decision‑making, organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Team working, motivation and influencing skills.
  • Experience leading successful change within a service.
  • Approachable, able to work independently, manually dexterous, receptive to change, adaptable, and an effective communicator.
