About the Role

The Ageing and Complex Medicine Directorate at Wrightington Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust currently comprises six consultants, one associate specialist and three specialist registrars.

The new Consultant will lead a team of six consultants, support the existing team and bring expertise in Acute Comprehensive Geriatric Medicine and sub‑specialties such as Stroke Medicine, Orthopaedic Geriatrics and Frailty Services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide Acute Comprehensive Geriatric Medicine care in an acute setting.
  • Contribute to specialist services: Stroke Medicine, Orthopaedic Geriatrics, Frailty, Parkinson’s disease and Dementia.
  • Deliver general care of elderly (GCo E) clinics and specialist TIA, stroke, falls, Parkinson’s and dementia clinics.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, community, clinic and care home visits.
  • Lead and support proactive case management including advance care planning.
  • Engage in the day service and provide night and weekend on‑call for general medicine.
  • Train and mentor junior medical staff and allied health professionals.
  • Support development of acute medical services within the Trust.
  • Work flexibly and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Entry on the Specialist Register or within six months of achieving CCT MRCP (or equivalent).
  • Full GMC licence to practice with MB Ch B or equivalent.
  • Recent comprehensive experience in Geriatric Medicine.
  • Dual accreditation in General Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine (CCT).
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence of proactive, self‑motivated practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team.

The position offers a 10PA job plan with the possibility of negotiating additional part‑time posts.

The Trust provides flexible working options, supports study leave for CPD, and offers funding up to an agreed limit.

Training for trainees is available through the Trust’s partnership with Edge Hill University, including a MSc route in Elderly Care Medicine.
