Overview Consultant Anaesthetist – Hammersmith Hospital We are recruiting a Consultant Anaesthetist to provide peri‑operative anaesthetic care for complex surgical services, including gynaecology, endocrine, hepatobiliary, upper GI, and renal procedures.

The role also involves pre‑assessment clinics for patients with renal failure and support for kidney transplantation pathways.

Responsibilities Deliver peri‑operative anaesthetic care for major general surgeries (hepatobiliary, upper GI, endocrine, gynae‑oncology).

Lead fortnightly pre‑assessment clinics for patients with chronic renal failure and high‑risk candidates for kidney transplant listing.

Participate in orthopaedic and plastic trauma anaesthesia once a week at St Mary’s Hospital (London Major Trauma Centre).

Provide on‑call anaesthetic coverage at Hammersmith Hospital with a 1:8 rota, covering kidney transplants, benign gynaecology, and surgical re‑operations.

Support electro‑physiology procedures and other expanding services.

Engage in teaching, training, and clinical audit activities.

Contribute to quality improvement projects and clinical governance.

Qualifications Stage 3 training or equivalent in anaesthesia for major general surgery, including hepatobiliary, endocrine, upper GI, and renal specialties.

Stage 3 training or equivalent in peri‑operative medicine and pre‑operative assessment.

Stage 3 training or equivalent in regional anaesthesia.

Demonstrable leadership and management skills, including staff supervision, budget awareness, and team development.

Proven teaching experience with undergraduates, postgraduates, and junior medical staff.

Knowledge of clinical audit principles, QI project delivery, and governance structures.

Proficiency in IT and computer systems.

Excellent written and spoken English.

Contract and Working Hours The position is a 10 Professional Activities (PA) contract: 7.5 PA for elective scheduled work, 1 PA for on‑call duties, and 1.5 PA per week allocated to continuing professional development, teaching, and governance.

One day per week is dedicated to trauma anaesthesia at St Mary’s Hospital.
