In order to provide the most comprehensive experience, successful applicants will participate in the laboratory rotation through the core sections of Automated Haematology and Coagulation, as well as the specialist area of Blood Transfusion. Candidates will be expected to work at either laboratory site – University Hospital of Wales or University Hospital Llandough – and undertake contracted hours over a seven‑day period, with shift working following a suitable period of training within the department.
As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, further opportunities will be provided to rotate into specialised laboratories. An opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the dynamic and evolving team within the Haematology Department at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
The department is looking for an HCPC‑registered Biomedical Scientist with an IBMS Certificate of Competence – an essential requirement – and an IBMS Specialist Diploma (or equivalent pre‑2004). Candidates who are 50–75% through completing their Specialist Diploma are welcome to apply and would be held on Band 5 until their examination is complete, at which point they would automatically transfer to Band 6.
The Haematology Department is one of the largest in the UK, offering a wide variety of analyses using modern equipment and processes, handling over 3,000 samples each day. The department holds UKAS ISO15189:2012 accreditation and is an HCPC approved training laboratory. Training and development opportunities are available and all staff are encouraged to actively participate in CPD. The department is a tertiary referral site for Haemostasis. Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
