Senior Clinical Fellow - Neonatal Medicine in Cardiff

Applications are invited for full-time Senior Clinical Fellow posts (x2) in Neonatology at Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. The post is available from 2 September 2026 for an initial 6-month period, with potential extension up to 24 months, subject to performance and service needs.

The successful applicant will join a busy tertiary neonatal unit providing specialist care for babies across South Wales and beyond. This role offers excellent clinical experience in neonatal medicine within a leading children's hospital, supported by a comprehensive teaching programme, study leave and a named educational supervisor. While not an accredited training post, educational opportunities are comparable to those available to deanery trainees.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is a major teaching health board with strong links to Cardiff University, offering opportunities for professional development, education and research. Subject to availability, future experience in paediatric subspecialties within the Children's Hospital for Wales may be available.

Main duties of the job:

This is an exciting opportunity to join our busy Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Cardiff, delivering high-quality care for newborn infants across NICU, High Dependency, Special Care, Transitional Care and postnatal wards. You will gain broad clinical experience within a supportive multidisciplinary team, developing skills in assessment, investigation and management of babies requiring specialist neonatal care. The post includes ward rounds, handovers, multidisciplinary working, teaching, audit and quality improvement activity, with supervision and support from experienced senior clinicians.

Job responsibilities:

The Senior Clinical Fellow in Neonatology will support the delivery of a comprehensive tertiary neonatal service within the Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales, Cardiff. The post holder will provide high-quality clinical care to newborn infants requiring intensive, high dependency and special care, participating in a full shift rota including evenings, nights and weekends. Key responsibilities include assessment, diagnosis and management of neonates; attendance at high-risk deliveries; stabilisation and transfer of critically ill infants; participation in outpatient and transitional care services; and contribution to multidisciplinary ward rounds and family-centred care. The post holder will support and supervise junior medical staff, contribute to teaching programmes for medical, nursing and allied health professionals, and actively participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and patient safety activities. The role offers experience across all areas of neonatal medicine, including neonatal intensive care, neonatal surgery, fetal medicine and tertiary specialist services. Opportunities are available for research, service development and leadership projects, supported by dedicated educational and clinical supervision within a university teaching hospital environment.

Person Specification:

• Qualifications: MB BS or recognised equivalent; Full MRCPCH UK or equivalent; Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice; Academic excellence (prizes, merits, distinctions etc.); MSc or PhD; Intercalated Degree.
• Experience: Five years full-time postgraduate training (or part-time equivalent), at least three of which will be Paediatrics/Neonatology; Experience of working in NHS in UK; Evidence of readiness to assume middle grade level clinical responsibilities; Evidence of good clinical practice as part of annual appraisals; Evidence of active participation/leadership in Clinical Governance, Quality Improvement, team management, and change management; 2 years of experience at middle grade level in Neonatology; UK experience in Tertiary Neonatology; Evidence of development of a special interest in Neonatology.
• Skills, Knowledge, Ability: Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English; Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working; Counselling and communication skills; Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance; Up to date with current practices in child protection/safeguarding; Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary; Computing skills; Audit; Research interests/experience relevant to specialty; Teaching experience.
