Senior Clinical Fellow in Neuro-oncology in Cardiff

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Neurosurgical Unit at Cardiff & Vale UHB, welcoming applications into the Neuro-Oncology Fellowship post CCT. With robust investments in technology and access to research, we hope to recruit a high calibre individual who has been successful in the FRCS examinations and would like to further their experience of Neuro-Oncology techniques. Based on the success of this recruitment and the skills achieved, an application will be made to the Royal College of Surgeons for Fellowship accreditation.

The post is available from 5th August 2026 for 12 months and is not recognised for training. The Senior Clinical Fellow in Neuro-Oncology will work primarily with the Neuro-Oncology consultants, as well as the whole Neurosurgical MDT team. They shall attend operating lists, oncology clinics (including a dedicated Low Grade Glioma Clinic) and weekly Neuro-Oncology MDT. Additional time will also be dedicated to attending Neuro-Oncology clinics in Velindre Cancer Centre and participating in the SRS service.

While they will be expected to take part in the middle grade on-call rota for general neurosurgery, there will be no regular daytime non-specialist clinical commitments unless deemed necessary. This Senior Clinical Fellow post will also participate in research work. There is a weekly educational meeting which the fellow will be expected to attend and contribute to.

Main duties of the job:

• The successful applicant will be required to perform clinical work within the neurosurgical service.
• The appointee will work closely with the medical and surgical teams.
• The post holder will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical students and junior doctors.
• The appointee will be expected to undertake audit and be encouraged to take on clinical research projects depending on the interests of the successful applicant(s).

Job responsibilities:

These are the current applicable pay scales; however, these may change upon implementation of the framework agreement for reform to the terms and conditions of service for resident doctors and dentists in Wales.

Person Specification:

• Qualifications: MBBS or equivalent, Training in Radiation Protection or agreement to attend next available course, FRCS examination, GMC Registration with Full License to Practice, CCT in Neurosurgery (or anticipated in the next 6 months), Intercalated Degree, MSc or PhD.
• Previous Experience: Previous Neurosurgical experience including responsibility for acute admissions at senior Registrar level, Evidence of previous Neuro-Oncology activity.
• Attitude, Aptitudes, Personal Characteristics: Motivated and efficient, Able to relate to patients, staff and medical colleagues, Flexible, caring and hardworking, Ability to work as part of a team.

Salary: £46,324 to £71,814 a year per annum (plus on calls).
