Cardiff & Vale University Health Board is seeking an enthusiastic Senior Orthotist (Band 6) to join our friendly and expanding Orthotics Service, based in the capital city of Wales. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a well-established, forward‑thinking NHS Orthotics department, delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care across a varied clinical caseload, valuing innovation, learning, and evidence‑based practice. Applications are welcomed from newly qualified or less‑experienced Orthotists and a structured development plan will support progression to Band 6.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver orthotic clinics with own caseload of patients and provide advice to medical and nursing staff in UHB on orthotic assessment, provision and management.
- Work on and contribute to a range of service developments, and be involved in working with and supervising students and trainees.
- Carry out MDT working; strong knowledge in working with scoliosis patients is an advantage.
- Undertake orthotic assessment and treatment of patients with routine and complex needs.
- Communicate effectively and efficiently with a range of professional colleagues (medical and surgical consultants, ward staff, therapy staff, and administration staff).
- Provide clinical and professional advice to the MDT and/or patients/carers regarding appropriate orthotic provision and ongoing care.
- Use a range of verbal and non‑verbal communication methods to ensure effective communication with patients, carers and colleagues where information may be highly complex and require skills of persuasion, motivation, negotiation and reassurance.
- Overcome barriers to understanding, including communication difficulties, anxiety or motivation.
- Establish clear and effective communication with orthotic product and service providers.
- Liaise with Clinical Lead Orthotist, Senior Specialist Orthotists, and Orthotic Services Manager as appropriate to ensure efficient and effective clinical services are maintained.
Essential Criteria
- HCPC registration as an Orthotist/Prosthetist
- Degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics
- Experience across a range of clinical pathologies
Qualifications & Experience
- BSc Hons Prosthetics/Orthotics
- HCPC registered
- At least 2 years experience in an orthotic role
- Evidence of CPD work over the past 2 years
- Good IT skills
- Experience working in an MDT setting
- Currently practising
Desirable
- Spoken Welsh
- Scoliosis experience
- BAPO membership
