Our mission is to provide an excellent patient experience and pursue continuous personal and service development. The role of the Operational Flow Manager / Senior Controller is pivotal in leading and monitoring operational issues relating to patient flow throughout the health board. The post holder will lead patient‑focused management of patient flow through the Emergency Unit and the rest of the hospital, ensuring the effective flow of unscheduled and scheduled patient streams from admission to discharge. This includes collaboration with senior managers, clinical teams, the Head of Operations, and the Head of Patient Flow, and providing professional leadership to Patient Flow Coordinators, Bed Bureau staff and Discharge Lounge staff. Use of clinical expertise, knowledge and skills to contribute to a high‑quality service, with a particular emphasis on time flow. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable; English and/or Welsh speakers are welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job:
- Work collaboratively with the unscheduled care team to ensure safe patient flow through the emergency and assessment units.
- Monitor and report barriers to discharge, working with Directorate Teams, Clinical Support Services and external organisations/agencies.
- Act as the lead operational link with Directorate Management Teams, senior nurses and medical staff during bed shortages, maintaining a proactive approach to bed crisis management.
- Communicate with senior clinicians and executives regarding high‑level decisions on patient flow, such as waiting lists and elective admissions.
- Coordinate with key departments to ensure a coordinated and efficient approach to patient admissions.
- Develop common approaches to patient access and bed capacity with other health boards, the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust, local health boards and the Welsh Government.
- Work with clinical boards to develop systems and processes that support patient flow.
