An exciting opportunity has developed for a fixed term Consultant Geriatrician appointment with specialist interest in Acute Oncology and Geriatric Oncology. The successful candidate will become part of the Geriatrics team at the University Hospital of Wales where they will support inpatient care for older people on a specialist geriatrics ward, alongside liaison and outpatient work supporting older people with cancer.

The successful candidate will use their GIM and Geriatric Medicine skillset to help with specialty retrieval, management and ongoing care of patients. The candidate will also be supported in exploring the opportunities and challenges that frail older people uniquely manifest in this setting.

The post will breakdown as follows from a job planning perspective:

  • Inpatient ward: 3.0 sessions
  • Onco-geriatrics outpatients/front door frailty: 1.5 sessions
  • SPA: 0.5 sessions

Main duties of the job:

The post holder will play a key role in the development and delivery of the Geriatric Oncology Service (GOS) at University Hospital of Wales, working at the interface between Geriatric Medicine and Oncology to improve outcomes for Older Adults with Cancer. This will include dedicated sessions supporting both outpatient and front-door frailty pathways, alongside integration with inpatient care where appropriate in the Acute Oncology Service.

The role will centre on the delivery of CGA within oncology pathways, providing holistic, multidisciplinary evaluation of older patients with cancer. The post holder will assess functional status, comorbidities, cognition, nutrition, polypharmacy and psychosocial factors, and use this information to guide individualised management and shared decision-making regarding cancer treatment.

The Consultant will also work closely with Surgical and Oncology colleagues as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing specialist geriatric expertise to treatment planning and risk stratification. The post holder will support the establishment and ongoing development of a structured Geriatric Oncology Service, helping to move from ad hoc geriatric input to a consistent, evidence-based model of care embedded within cancer pathways. This will involve contributing to service design, pathway development, and evaluation, including data collection and participation in audit and quality improvement activities.

Person Specification

Qualifications:

  • Full GMC / GDC registration with a licence to practise
  • On Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT / CESR (Combined Programme) due within 3 months of interview date
  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent
  • Higher Diploma or Degree e.g. Masters, PhD, MD, DSc

Experience:

  • General Medicine and relevant specialty experience
  • Experience of working in Cancer services

Skills:

  • Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working
  • Clinical Governance
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
  • Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation

Research:

  • Evidence of active research interests
  • Ability to critically appraise research
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication

Teaching:

  • Evidence of teaching medical / dental students and junior doctors / dentists

Management:

  • Commitment to participating in and understanding of the management process
  • Evidence of effective leadership skills
