Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Cardiologist post with interest in Cardiac Electrophysiology, based at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. This is a locum post for 12 months pending anticipated recruitment to a new substantive post.
The Cardiothoracic department at UHW includes 16 cardiologists and 5 Cardiac surgeons who deliver a broad range of specialist services. UHW receives tertiary heart rhythm referrals from all DGH's in the SE Wales region. This includes elective referrals to specialist heart rhythm clinics and inter-hospital transfers for emergency ablation or consideration of device implantation. In contrast to many centres, CRT implants are performed by heart failure Consultants which allows our two Heart Rhythm Specialists to dedicate their catheterisation time exclusively to catheter ablation procedures. Two tertiary heart rhythm clinics are run weekly which has resulted in a significant waiting list for conventional ablation and atrial fibrillation ablation, hence the need for a 3rd ablationist colleague.
In addition to ablation, the heart rhythm service is actively involved in the regional inherited cardiac conditions service and participates in a regular Cardiogenetics MDT. There is also a regular T-LOC MDT which involves input from cardiology, neurology and care of the elderly. Candidates should ideally have a preference for ablation but if a suitable candidate has a preference for device implantation, this can be accommodated.
Main duties of the job
- The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be the provision of high-quality Heart Rhythm care to both elective and emergency patients.
- Contribute to the running of the Tertiary Heart Rhythm Service with particular emphasis on expanding catheter ablation services.
- Provide, with colleagues, out-patient cardiology clinics and associated services, including referral triage, electronic advice and clinical report system.
- Contribute to cardiac multidisciplinary working and MDT meeting.
- Help deliver a high quality inpatient Heart Rhythm Consult service.
- Participate in a 1 in 8 on-call rota for weekend cover and 1:12 for Monday to Friday cover.
You will be expected to work flexibly with the other Consultants and clinical teams to ensure continuity of care and optimal utilisation of cardiac catheterisation lab and bed resources. Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements. You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary for this post is £121,264 per annum.
Applicants should preferably either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.
