Locum Consultant Cardiologist - Adult Congenital Heart Disease

An opportunity has arisen for a locum Consultant Cardiologist in Adult Congenital Heart Disease to work within the University Hospital of Wales and across the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and South Wales network. This is a 9 month fixed term full-time post which will complement the present team of 19 'in-house' Clinical Cardiologists delivering tertiary cardiac services of the highest standard to a population of 1.3 million people.

This service works on a hub and spoke model with Cardiff and Vale UHB acting as the level 2 hub with identified links into Bristol and outreaching to each Health Board across South Wales.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales.

Main duties of the job

To work collaboratively with consultant colleagues to deliver the Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) service across the designated hospital sites, providing specialist assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of adults with congenital heart disease.

The majority of the post holder's time will be spent in assessing and treating patients with ACHD. There may be an opportunity to use the 2 specialist interest sessions to help develop an area of expertise, aligning with service requirements accepting that options may be limited given the confines of a 9 month post. A commitment to general cardiology could be supported, subject to further discussion.

The appointee will be expected to support the expansion and strengthening of the ACHD clinical network and develop close links with colleagues at the level 1 centre in Bristol in the diagnostic and treatment planning facilitated through the MDT process.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University's School of Medicine will be expected.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• On GMC Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT / CESR(CP) due within six months of interview date
• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
• Higher Degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)
• Ability to travel to other locations to fulfill requirements of the job
• Flexible with ability to work both in a team and alone

Experience

• Appropriate training and experience in the practice of adult cardiology including ACHD cardiology
• ACHD sub-specialty (non-interventional) experience / expertise

Skills

• Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working

Clinical Governance

• Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice.
• Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation (or equivalent)
• Understanding clinical risk management and clinical governance

Research

• Ability to critically appraise research
